It took me about two months to read this book but I never tired of it. It's actually split into a number of different books, so there's a new book for each different era, but of course there's quite a lot of overlap too. It's amazing how he covers the history of all the world's regions without becoming either too general or too detailed. Highly recommended!

J.M. Roberts, knows his subject, no doubt about that. He covers social, economic and cultural history over a period of 65 years. All important themes are covered, as you would expect from this type of book, such as the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire, both World Wars, rise of Fascism, Russian revolution etc. It is easy to navigate the chapters and find areas you are looking for.
However, this book is written in a dull, heavy style. Roberts seems to delight in long winded prose when making a point, not something that lends itself to easy reading. Certainly it has it's uses as a text for the undergraduate historian but for the casual reader it may be just a little too much.

Interested to understand the world today, and having decided the internet, radio and tv are restricted sources of information, I picked this book up again, having bought it back in 2001. Its a fearsome volume, some 900 pages long. However, once you get going with it, the information is dazzling, its clear that the author is a very accomplished historian. A quick glance at the inside cover shows that he indeed worked at the Princeton Advanced Study alongside Oxford and various other posts. I might start at the beginning again once I am finished!

I bought this book for some sing along fun with my young family. I'm not remotely religious, but there are some "classics" here that I enjoyed singing at school in the 1980's and I was surprised by how many I still knew well.

There are two complete edtions on offer, so I went for this the cheaper version, as I couldn't see any reason not to. When it arrived I realised it was cheaper because it is the WORDS ONLY edition - a fact which you can't quite make out from the picture (or at least I couldn't). Anyway, I now have the other edition too which has the WORDS AND MUSIC which helps if you want to play along as I did.

Hope that helps.

This book is extremely well written by one of the leading authorities on the subject. Excellent colour photographs are provided throughout the work. The reader will be amazed by the level of detail on all aspects of the era covered by the text. This is a substantial publication in many respects.

Prospective purchasers should note that the author (or a recent editor) uses the BCE/CE date terminology rather than BC/AD throughout the book.

This book presents the main biblical evidence for the deity of Christ. It includes a vast number of lines of evidence but covers each one only very briefly. It is written in everyday English without much theological jargon. No knowledge of Greek/Hebrew is assumed. If you wish to pursue a point in more depth, there are plenty of endnotes recommending more detailed books and journal articles. The authors have obviously explored the subject very thoroughly and are passionate about what they write.
Some criticisms of the book are:
(1) Some lines of argument are difficult to follow because the wording is vague and ambiguous. Some whole passages would benefit from being re-written to improve clarity.
(2) The book is written in an informal style ... Read More:

This book is aptly titled, for young Torless is certainly confused; confused about personal and institututional power, about the founts of sexual passion and his own orientation. He questions the purpose and meaning of education, his own and in general. He perceives language is inadequate to its task. In his crisis it dissociates from the worlds and states of consciousness which it supposedly describes. He has a beef with academic specialists, as men who have had all the poetry caned out of them. Two pages of Kant make the kid sweat, but he has a fraught and engaging relationship with imaginary numbers.

Trapped in an academy at the bleak and dusty edge of the realm, homesick and morally inept, he falls in with a couple of emotionally and philosophically ... Read More:
