Rough-and-tumble adventure at sea with high-tech; Clive Cussler owns the genre. Plague Ship (Oregon Files) is the fourth book of the Oregon series but the first that I've read and it was no surprise to find a fantastic story line and implausible derring-do. Just what I was hoping for! The Oregon series features Juan Cabrillo and his Corporation. Cabrillo is an ex-CIA operative turned paramilitary mercenary. Along with his hand-picked team he takes assignments mainly from the CIA. Oregon is the Corporation's base ship, a rust bucket refitted for speed, maneuverability and anonymity. excellant book, unable to put down, and the story really flowed. The follow up book Skeleton coast carried straight with the action, recommended. The story cuts back and forth in the great Cussler tradition, bringing various scenarios to a gripping conclusion. A real modern pirate story, fantastic.

This is essentially 'Boys Own' fiction for an adult audience. The plot is barely believable, the characters one-dimensional at best, and the hero gets out of more impossible situations than is humanly possible. It's almost a case of 'with one bound Jack was free', and always the explosion conveniently seals off the cave behind him, not in front. Having said that, the author certainly keeps the pace going, and it's an easy book to read - a good train journey book, in essence - and he certainly does his research. If he could just tone down the plot and action, and put more effort into exploring the characters he's created, he could probably write quite a decent novel.

This book must be one of the worst I've read. I variously laughed out loud (the Niagara Falls escape); groaned at the improbabilities (he drives 100 miles in a truck through the Central African jungle in 2 hours!); and went to sleep as yet again our untrained hero fights/kills professional mercenaries by the dozen, without ever eating or sleeping. And as for our heroine and the 'rescuing angel' character who arrives in a suit in the middle of Africa/Russia/USA at just the right moments, words fail me. Even reading this on a beach in mid-summer would be a waste of time. Come back M - all is forgiven!

Brilliantly written and utterly gripping. Although the plot veers towards cloud-cuckoo land at times, this serves to heighten the intrigue of which Du Brul is a master.

Brilliantly written and utterly gripping. Although the plot veers towards cloud-cuckoo land at times, this serves to heighten the intrigue of which Du Brul is a master.

Definitely better than Pandora's Curse. The story moves along a a fast pace, about a Chinese General trying to take over the Panama Canal, and of course, the only one standing in his way is the hero of the story, Philip Mercer. Not what you'd expect from the title, and quite a few surprises thrown in. His best book since Medusa Stone. A good alternative if you've read all of Cussler's books, but you can tell where he gets his ideas for his books. My only complaint; he should spend more time giving his hero a personality(i.e. a sense of humor?). The Phil's character reads like a cardboard box-no personality. Still a lot of fun to read, and enough action to keep any reader interested.
