Like many others, I had high hopes for this book because of the setting. Unlike a lot of the other people on here, I actually can sympathise with Gabriel and his descent into addiction and truly dark antics, but I have to agree that the characterisation is atrocious - nobody has any sort of memorable qualities and you will constantly be wondering who is who. The ending in Australia seems tacked on, goes nowhere and is really confusing too.

In all, a waste of your precious time. Worth the one star only for the bit in the middle where Gabriel starts robbing graves - that's the only part where you sense something is actually going to happen and force the characters to act/react.

Buy 'The Minutes of the Lazarus Club' instead.

I currently own 2 different editions of Cunninghams because I find it so useful. If you are on a veterinary course or a course in which you need to be slightly clever then this book will not confuse you. If it does then theres something wrong, the book lays out everything you need to know in system format about the different physiological systems of the animal body. This new fourth edition is a very nice improvement on the old one. With a totally new coloured format, tonnes of new diagrams (and when you see the little Cunningham word in your lecture beneath a picture as I have done so many times in mine, it means its been taken from this book). Many of my lecturers reference the diagrams specifically because they explain certain concepts so well. Depending ... Read More:

This is the sort of book that could only have become a best seller in a post 9/11,George Bush America. Written in a simplistic style and top heavy in right wing pathos, in a way it is almost a mirror image of the Gung ho post 1945 hollywood war films in which every young marine eats apple pie and loves his mother, and wins the war. Even though the author lived some time in Japan the book in disturbingly america (or marine) centric. According to the author the marines are the best fighting force in the world- tell that to the other elite forces. By calling the war in the Pacific essentially an american war he insult the millions of Asians who died at the hands of the Japanese not to mention the british, Australians etc. In addition the battle of Iwo Jima ... Flyboys is a book primarily about Gearge Bush's Navy flying days around Iwa Jima and its smaller sister island. It's much more, however, as it is a story of America's rise to dominant power in the world, and therefore goes back to the central issue of war; racial predudice. That issue has been best aregued by Niall Ferguson in his book War of the World".
Here the story of the U:S. in the 19th Century becoming great through ethnically cleansing their vast land. This forms a background to viewing what the Japanese were up to in the early 20th Century.A short history of both sides belief systems is explained. The Americans possessing a system involving humility and forgiveness from Christs work on the cross, the Japanese being of an entirely different order: the belief ... Read More:

10.The Deep Field by: James Bradley

Books : The Deep Field
Anyone citing Daniel C. Dennett in the opening lines of a book review [Roger McDonald's MR DARWIN'S SHOOTER] is worthy of notice. Bradley's review was a stirring introduction to the qualities of this sensitive, talented writer. Wrack, his first novel, deserves more attention than it received. The Deep Field is a superb expression of his originality and narrative style.

It seems pretentious to comment on a book on a site where the author has given us so much of his feelings in producing this book. Books are written for readers, however, and his own reflections expressed here cannot replace what any reader of this fine work may experience from delving into it.

Finding a timeless location grows increasingly difficult for us all. It began so for Anna, ... Read More:
