This book's a reasonable guide, but is eclipsed by the brilliantly written and hugely informative Bradt Guide. We took both books to Ethiopia (09/2006) and found the Bradt one to be far superior.

Books : Corsica (Lonely Planet Country and Regional Guides)
The group I was in went to Corsica with the main intention of walking the famous GR20. The section of the book about the walk was excellent with detailed information about each days walk, and useful advice about what gear to bring. We found most timings, and suggestions about what gear neccesary to err on the 'safe side'. So someone following the advice here should be ok. Where we did enter civilisation, the info about (budget) restaurants and places to say was fine in our experience. This guide contributed to a great holiday!

As usual the lonely planet West Africa is full of details, which enable a traveller to travel around West Africa, ranging from the best hotels in small towns to bus schedules. From the fertile coast to the sandy deserts it provides a good but brief overview of the nature, history and present sights. The only weak point is the limited amount of information on regional cultural differences or history, which is probably caused by the number of countries covered

Once upon a time, Lonely Planet had a good guide to Papua New Guinea (371 pages), and an excellent one to the Solomon Islands (279 pages). For better or worse these fascinating countries don't exactly attract hordes of holidaymakers, so after leaving those books unupdated for many years, the publisher has now decided to dump them together in this new edition (272 pages).
The result is basically a new, much slimmer guide to Papua New Guinea, with fewer than 30 pages on the Solomons (where it only actually covers half the country even nominally).
Not only has much of the detail been thrown out, the quality of information has also gone downhill sharply! :-(
The authors have very obviously never visited even major tourist destinations ... Read More:

Books : Turkey (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill & ... Read More:

Books : Tahiti and French Polynesia (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
Far from being fully comprehensive, this guide is pretty vague. Not bad as a rough guide, and admittedly has some useful numbers that I don't know where else I would have found, which is the crux of this book's success. There is no real competitor (it would seem) that has backpacker budget information. If you are looking for a mid-price or luxury holiday then there are better guides. French Polynesia isn't exactly the budget travellers haven that Thailand or even Fiji can be and there are less options for the financially challenged tourist. However the guide could be a lot more comprehensive with the information there is available.

Do not take any prices or times in the book at face value - I found most prices a little higher in practice and times ... Read More:
