I read Of Mice and Men as part of a practice GCSE exercise with my class and found myself pleasantly surprised at the quality of writing. Steinbeck clearly deserved his Nobel Prize in literature and this classic piece of American literature is evidence. The author uses simple but appropriate language to portray the era of the Great Depression (1930s). The book is rather slow but enticing as the slow build up gives way for a truly original climax. Demonstrating a mastery of language, description and dialogue, 'Of Mice and Men' is truly emotional and deals with a lot of the problems faced in the 1930s and our outlook on society in general.

I found a very short excerpt of this screenplay in an old GCSE exam paper, at a writing class I was attending, and there were tears of laughter streaming down my face. Pure gold. Five stars. No problem.

This book is great if you need to know about regional economics, it has all the models explained, lots of examples and then all about the relevant policy. It is a text book on degree courses but it is still easy to read and understand. The 2000 edition has up to date EU policy in it with the changes to the Objective regions as from this year.

I have just finished reading this book as my son passed it on to me after finishing his GCSE English exam. I found it an amazing book, I felt a sense of claustrophobia and desperation as I read it almost as if it was happening to me, especially the scenes when they are lost in Hang Wood, and when later Hooper locks Kingshaw in a shed. I would however, question it being used as a GCSE book. Teenagers of that age are impressionable and might be going through similar circumstances, and due to the very dark ending, this book would not offer any hope. I remember doing Jane Eyre for my O levels - at least it was a more cheerful read!
