.....just a bit disappointing. I got really excited about this and bought it hardback as soon as it came out, however I don't feel it matched up to Joanna Harris's other works. Don't get me wrong, its well written, the descriptions of the chocolate still make your mouth water, and the magic is ever present, there is just something missing. I loved Vianne's unique and quirky character in 'Chocolat' but in lollipop shoes there is something that doesn't quite follow. A must if you've read Chocolat, but probably very frustrating if you haven't.

This is Joanne Harris's first novel and is vastly different from the books she is well known for. It's a romantic novel, not slushy hearts and flowers, but a gothic romance filled with vampires and horrific scenes of blood and lust. It's sexy, violent and gruesome, and her writing makes your heart pound with fear. This book is a page-turner and I can't recommend it highly enough so make sure you snap up a copy before it goes out of print again.

Looking at all the reviews below, opinion seem to be split between favouring and disliking this book. I'd seen the film a while ago, hadn't read any of these reviews and borrowed it as a bit of light holiday reading. After completing it, I have to plant myself firmly in the negative camp.

Without re-iterating the arguments below, I measure the value of a novel in it's ability to generate a page-turning plot, well-rounded characters that you actually care about and, most importantly, to give the reader a revelatory insight either into themselves or the world around them.

Unfortunately this book does none of these things, unless of course I'm mistaken and rural France is a religiously repressed society ruled by tyrannical priests ... Read More:

Brilliantly written, you could feel yourself in the school amongst the teachers. The ever more dramatic twists and turns keep you on edge and the final surprise is utterly brilliant in conception. Having been initially unenthused by the subject matter, and really only reading the book as I came across it in a charity shop and had enjoyed 'Blackberry Wine' so much - I cannot remember enjoying a book this much in years. The only difficulty I had was remembering who all the various characters were, although wikipaedia does a good summary if you are easily confused, like me!

Writer's Market UK is an informative and helpful read. The majority of this book is made up of a directory of magazines, publishers, theatres, agencies, resources and competitions. The layout is attractive and the information exhaustive, but there are other more established handbooks offering similar information. Where Writer's Market UK scores is in the hundred plus pages of articles.

Sadly I found the tone of some of these articles rather depressing. Yes, I know the odds are stacked against me making a living from writing - but the purpose of buying a book like this is to learn how to success in this goal. I've not felt this negative tone in similar directories I've read.

There are positive and inspiring articles. The first is by Joanne ... Read More:

This book is a delight. Even to read it takes you into the heart of France, it's markets & kitchens. All the recipes I have tried were a success, but there is also a thread running through of life in a warm French family, it is as good a read as Joanne's novels.

Another engrossing read from Joanne Harris which although similar to `Chocolat `and `Blackberry Wine' it is a much darker story. Once again set in France this time a small village `Les Laveuses' near Angers on the banks of the Loire, during WWII and the present day.
The protagonist is Framboise Dartigen who has returned to the village after a long absence to live in the farmhouse of her childhood. Her mother Mirabelle Dartigen has since died and part of Framboise's inheritance was an album of memories and recipes. It is through studying this album that her memories of her childhood start to haunt her. Framboise has invented a new identity for herself, as she knows the villagers would look on her with contempt if they knew whose daughter she was. She uses her mother's recipes ... Read More:

Joanne Harris says the book was re-published due to demand. I wonder who from? One of the main characters is an artist who is some kind of paedophile ('He likes children, he picks the youngest' when he visits the brothel). We are supposed to believe that he doesn't even recognise it is his wife he is visiting at the brothel. Her mind/body have been taken over by the brothel madame's dead daughter in a bid for revenge. There's also a plot to kill Mr Chester (as his wife must call him). It's load of nonsense. Like another reviewer, I had to keep checking the front cover to see if this was a Joanna Harris novel, but for a different reason.

Note to established authors, do not agree to have your early novels published/re-published until you are 100% certain they will not ... Read More:

Although I have had the majority of Joanne Harris's previous novels on my bookshelves for a number of years, so far I have only read Chocolat, Coastliners and Gentleman and Players. Now having just finished Blackberry Wine I intend to rectify this and catch up by reading the rest as soon as possible. So far she has proved to be for me a riveting storyteller, somehow making the locations and characters leap from the page. Her descriptions of food and wine so good that you feel you can smell and taste them. I finished this with a glass of wine sitting in the garden this evening and felt transported to Lansquenet, which was also the location for Chocolat. I believe also that some characters reappear in The Lollipop Shoes, receiving a copy of this recently as a gift is the inspiration to ... Read More:
