Have suffered from depression for over 30 years on and off! . . I am not sure if a book can help. I have read loads and still find that if I am kind to myself and allow the depression to run its course, don't fight it or hide from it. (AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT.) Then this too will pass. We each have to find our own way through our maze! Do we not. I wish all who are depressed a brighter future. Open your heart and let yourself in! (I FIND MEDITATION HELPS THE MOST. .JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND BREATH. ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE WHO YOU ARE. FIRST STEP IS TO LEARN HOW TO EXCEPT YOURSELF AS YOU ARE, THEN MAYBE ADMIT YOU NEED HELP. GOOD LUCK TO ALL. This is a real good book to start with. Then maybe you could find a Buddhist meditation group and join ... Read More:

William Eggleston's photos grow on you. Look through this book for the first time and the contents seem a bit like ordinary snapshots but look again and then again and with each viewing the images become more familiar (still with something fresh to discover each time) but now they start to blend together seamlessly. One reason for this, I think, is that the photos capture the everyday and the ordinary. Taken around Eggleston's hometown of Memphis and in the Deep South, they show some of his relations, street scenes, interiors, buildings and more, though the captions only state the locations. John Szarkowski says in the books introduction "..today's most radical and suggestive colour photography derives much of its vigor from commonplace models" ... Read More:

As this book is aimed at professionals I was very weary of buying it. There is always the fear that such books will pay too much heed to genetics and so become very depressing. Fortunately, the authors tend to believe that environment, upbringing, and the attitudes we hold are the main triggers of depression and this can be overcome using cognitive behavour therapy (CBT).

As an example of their optimism compare the two views here, one from mainstream psychiatry the other from the authors of the above book. Biopsychiatry tends to believe that everytime a depression strikes, the brain becomes more damaged and therfore more vulnerable to depression ( if this is true then a good dose of fish oil - best taken as pure EPA - will put it right, but ... I'd advise people to ignore the negative reviews for the following reasons:

1) People now talk about specific refactorings so, like design patterns, you need to know the names.
2) It was never supposed to teach you good design. If you want to learn that there are good books out there (including by Craig Larman and Robert C. Martin).
3) Some of it is basic but you can ignore that stuff if you want to, and when your doing some of the more complicated refactorings they could well be useful.
4) As Martin Fowler points out you don't need to read it cover to cover, in fact he advises you use it as a reference.

What this does teach you is how to iteratively improve bad code, something every developer needs ... Read More:

The term "Graphic Novel" is often misused as it often encompasses mere collections of individual comics that were never intended as a single narrative. (See numerous superhero collections for example.) However, Classical Comics are true graphic novels; designed as books from the outset. This adaptation of Macbeth is superb, - Jon Haward has worked tremendously hard at illustrating the prose (no mean feat) and it's a work that I'm sure he's deservedly proud of. In lesser hands it could have been a failure, but under Haward it's a definite success.

I for one am definitely looking forward to future Classical Comics. The new golden age of British adventure comics is here.

Although I have 'known of' this book for over 20 years it wasn't until the age of 43 (i.e. now) that I finally got around to reading it. On the one hand, now that I have read it, I am sorry I didn't do so earlier. On the other hand, perhaps at a younger age I wouldn't have derived the same amount of pleasure? Whatever the case, I cannot say other than that this is a stunningly good book.

The most striking point to me was how little (if anything) has changed beyond the way we dress, eat, communicate etc. (in a word: outer appearances) since the 1840s when 'Vanity Fair' was written. Most of us (and I readily include myself) are still as anxious as then to be upwardly mobile in society, to be 'noticed', to belong to that select group of people enjoying high ... Read More:
