This book is an excellent guide to the technique of mindfulness. The principles of mindfulness are essentially very simple but amazingly effective. It's something that we all forget to do, and this book serves as a powerful reminder to bring our attention away from our thoughts and into our experience. The authors are free of academic jargon and are clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the benefits of mindfulness, and the book is clearly not just for people who might be suffering from depression. I recommend it highly along with Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now, and Steve Taylor's Making Time Making Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It, which uses mindfulness as a way of living in the present ... This audiobook consists of two CDs. The first is the author talking about meditation, and this CD is wonderful to listen to. He has a really nice voice to listen to and talks as if he is just talking to you alone. He makes if feel as if Meditation is available to everyone, and anyone can do this, which is true, but so helpful to a beginner to be reassured that it is within their reach. The second CD is a set of progressive meditations, quite short, but each one taking you a stage further on. I found them really helpful to work through, as it got me to a stage where I could continue alone. I am a beginner at this but have found this audiobook very helpful and I do actually find it works. I had high hopes for this book, having read the reviews. However, after struggling through the near-500 pages, I felt compelled to place my own review as a counter-balance.

This book could have been a third of the size if Jon Kabat-Zinn didn't wafle so much. As with his CD's, he likes to prattle on, constantly repeating the same points until your mind goes numb from sheer boredon.

He does make a few good suggestions - unfortunately they are lost in all of the waffle. I purchased this book because I thought it might help my insomnia - it did, but only because I got so bored reading it that I fell asleep!

I wanted to provide a review as a counter-balance to the other, more positive reviews.
I am currently reading 'Full Catastrophe Living' and purchased the CD to help me practice meditation. To be honest, I wish I'd stuck to just the book! Jon seems like a lovely, compassionate man but I find him incredibly annoying!
I tried the 'eating meditation' first and could not stop myself from giggling everytime he said the word 'raisin'! I love the New York accent but, unfortunately, I do not find it relaxing. His constant repetition, particularly of the words 'moment...by moment...by moment...by moment...by moment' (you get the picture!) is irritating beyond belief. A lot of the time I just wsished he'd shut up and leave me to it! I suspect Jon ... Read More:

This is the best introduction to meditation I have come across. Both men talk with authority, yet with a gentle and compassionate tone. Jon Kabat-Zinn's voice and words are wonderfully effective in directing you through the meditation process.
