Reading this book is a bit like having the TV series on DVD; there's a lot more extras, and the commentary is a lot more in-depth.

This book is all about Jon Ronson (a cross between Woody Allen and Louie Theroux) and his travails as he interviews the world's leading conspiracy theorists. Like Louie Theroux he tends to sit back, play innocent and let his subjects talk themselves into a position of absurdity, but in the book we get more of a chance to read what it would be like to be in the company of these people.

It's amusing, and it's interesting to see how the underlying atmosphere of paranoia starts to get Ronson considering the possibility of even the more absurd thoeries going round.

I do feel that ... Read More:

An enjoyably light read that doesn't try to over-claim for what is quite a slight piece of investigative journalism. The style is similar to Louis Theroux: ask innocent sounding questions, and let people talk. And quite soon you're thinking...are these people for real? In this case that's a pretty serious question, because these people are in charge of the most powerful military in the world. But in the end, too many questions are left unasked, never mind unanswered.

A poor man's Louis Theroux...that's the best way to describe Jon Ronson. A feather-light Louis Theroux. It''s the old formula: find an eccentric or strange place/person/belief system; interview the personalities; repeat that you don't understand the place/person/beliefs etc..etc...and wrap it all up in light satire.

Except that he isn't very funny or never goes in for the kill. Ronson's just so subtle in his approach that he never really makes a mark or finds out anything substantial. Maybe that's just his style...genuinely too embarrased (as demonstrated in the first part of the book as he reveals his neuroses - which only raise a bit of a smile) to really ask some penetrating questions like a Louis Theroux would.

This really ... Read More:

If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters, would they eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare? I don't know. What i do know is a single dyslexic baboon, with a broken keyboard and no hands could have created something more engaging than, Out of the Ordinary: True Tales of Everyday Craziness.
The only thing that is crazy about this book is that someone pays this man to write this boring, smug, rubbish. I will only be pleased to open this book again if i run out of toilet paper.

An aptly named book of 137 photos. The book's size, jacket and endpapers colour (olive green) are all nicely indicative of a field studies book from years ago. The photos of course are bang up to date and I could just imagine Stephen Gill getting rough prints and sticking them in a similar sized blank book, a sort of working reference and composition guide.

The eight sections are an interesting collection of what can be seen in everyday contemporary Britain though perhaps I should qualify that by adding that I think they are all taken in southern England. The sections are: folks listening to personal stereos (14) cash machines (5) ladies pushing shopping trolleys (15) sitting on a train (30) road works (25) gallery warders (11) the backs of street posters ... People from other countries keen to find out about aspects of life in the U.K should buy this book.Don't bother with any tourist spun sterile twoddle.
This is why i love the U.K (and sometimes hate the U.K).These photos are in the same league as Martin Parr and Stephen Gill whose work i also love. Reading/looking through this book has been a very moving experience. Don't forget to support your local Posties and look after your post offices.
