I was given this book as a gift and since then I have bought it for three friends. It really is the best cookbook on by shelf.

I have not made one recipe from it that did not turn out fantastically well - and there's a fantastic combination of modern and old fashioned recipes, quick and easy and more complicated meals.

I don't have a garden or an aga or a double oven or any fancy cooking equipment and it is quite usable for the urban cook! There are so many brilliant recipes that it would be quite possible to cook just from this book all year long.

Also the book is so pretty, brightly coloured with two bookmark ribbons that it makes an ideal gift.

I took this book along with others to Tuscany - my first visit. We were staying in the middle of Chiantishire and found the book invaluable and for our limited time there, accurate. There are detailed descriptions of Florence and Siena but also some helpful guidance on the Tuscany villages. Useful because the villages take time to get to and we needed to prioritise. Very accurate about the restaurants and trattorias we used.

Not only was this book helpful when choosing where to stay - information was accurate and relevant - it was also invaluable in terms of finding ways to save money (which is a must in Venice!).
But the best feature about this book was its information on the places to visit. It saved us a fortune because we didn't need to buy guide books for any of the venues!
The book is written with fascinating tidbits of information, many of which will make you smile and laugh, so be careful not to read in church if you're not prepared to stifle your laughter.

If I had to say one negative thing about this book, it would be that the entry fees are now very slightly out of date... but if you add 1 euro to the price in the book, you're never ... Read More:

a good gardening book but somewhat misleading, in the small print it tells you that the plants and arrangements are not actually in Sarah Ravens own garden. I find this quite dissapointing.

I was really tempted to give this book a five star rating but for one point - this is a very short book and, while it does what it says on the cover, if you follow Alan's advice then within a few months you'll want something more detailed. So while it is an excellent volume in its own right it's quite poor value. I wouldn't regard myself as an experienced gardener but even I found only a few pages of information in here that was new to me.

For most people your probably better off saving the money and buying something like the RHS Encyclopedia of gardening, its more expensive but it will last you for years rather than months. Borrow this book (or buy it and sell it again) by all means and it will give an excellent grounding in what you need ... Read More:

This book made me smile from beginning to end. Normally I would expect the fact that it is more of an evolution than a story to bother me, but it didn't. The author paints a huge array of characters with great affection and attention to detail, affirming humanity in much of its wierd and wonderfulness, and exploring the intricate webs of relationships which make up one life. I can't do it justice, you have to read it, and enjoy!

This is such a fun idea, and engagingly written. I loved this book - I found it hugely entertaining but also learnt a lot about plants. The pictures are beautiful and really support her text and ideas. A book for plant lovers and novices alike.
