Worth reading cover to cover, this book is written in a lively style and has DK's usual high quality photos on every page. I bought a second copy as a gift for a friend. I wish I'd read this when I was at school - I'd have wanted to become an architect.

I bought this book because I wanted to hear a great poet talking about trains and the era in which they reached their zenith. The synopsis refers to "ten letters selected by his daughter each describe a journey that he made or that he planned to make or that he planned for a friend or relative. Jonathan Glancey has added his own words to each letter; words that set the scene, bring the letters to life, etc." and there's the problem. The letters are all too brief, some only a couple of pages long. Some of them are really just writing to state what train the authour would be on and when he would arrive. Others only touch on a railway journey very briefly in the context of a description of a visit or holiday.
Jonathan Glancey fills the gap with ... Read More:

If you took all the books ever written about the Spitfire and laid them end-to-end you'd only have to go and pick them all up again, but what you would appreciate is that there've been one helluva lot of `em; good, bad and indifferent. Here's another, and it immediately begs the question; what can there be left to say? Not much, as it turns out, but it's the way the story is told that sets this missive apart. The author reveals a quite unabashed affection for the subject of his `biography'. I bought this book because I wanted to understand the phenomenon that the Spit has become, why so many seem to swoon in its presence or wipe a tear when it flies overhead. It gets to me too and I want to understand why! All the book really did was show me ... Read More:

The British Landscape

The images in this book make one see the apparently familiar in a completely new light. Davies leads one to a new vision, perhaps one that one may have glimpsed before, but not with such clarity and integrity. Pigeonholed, he is a landscape photographer. But these images of land, city and industrial 'scapes are not only beautiful but cumulatively and, then now with a new eye, going back individually they are revelatory.
