I hate to admit it: I like to read books about serial killers. The abnormal psychology that drives them provides a new perspective on what every day life is all about. This book begins as such a classic, involving lots of weirdness (hands chopped off, bones kept as souvenirs, bodies facing east, burials of prostitutes in a nature sanctuary, the Bird Marsh) . . . but tails off from there. The book's redeeming feature is that Jonathan Kellerman takes the time to make some of the new characters interesting, complex, and likely to surprise the reader.

Alex Delaware also has a bigger role to play than in several of the recent books in the series, especially in acting like a good guy.

The book's main weakness is ... Read More:

Totally agree with R Clary. I've read all Kellerman's books and have never found one so difficult to read. Too slow and the incessant changing possibilities debated by the detectives about what might have happened bored me to tears. I suspected more than once these were just to fill as many pages as possible as they certainly didn't pique my interest. Although I started out interested in Tanya her constant references to her sainted 'Mommy' got on my nerves quite quickly.
I'll be glad to finish this book but fortunately I've enjoyed enough Kellerman novels to give the next one a try.

Books : Compulsion
This is yet another offering by prolific writer Kellerman. It's a bit run of the mill (like the last 10 books or so) but provide 'comfort reading' when you feel like it.

The killer is a bit unusual, there a secondary plot to add a bit of interest and Milo is still my fav character.

Ideal for a rainy weekend or to take on the beach.

The consensus is The Lady in the Lake is not comparable to Chandler's "big three" (Big Sleep, Long Goodbye, Farewell My Lovely), but I found it just as satisfying.

Chandler's writing is oil slick. So easy, so intelligent, so very cool. As usual the characters are somehow subtle but eccentric all at once and the similes and descriptions are stylishly inventive. The plot doesn't weave and deceive as much as some of his other novels but this didn't detract from the story for me.

The Marlowe in TLITL is less hostile, less paranoid, less aggressive than in some of the other novels. This makes me like him more but some readers may prefer his younger, spikier self.

Still, like all the other Chandler-Marlowe novels, ... Read More:

I may be biased, because I think Kellerman is one of the better writers around at the moment. And, actually, has been for the past decade or so. I also think Alex Delaware is a wonderful, wonderful character.

He's sardonic, and unflappable: he is the epitome of the "strong, silent type". What's fascinating with the Delaware series is we get to see what goes on inside the head of the strong silent type. Not something we get to see an awful lot. These people are often a mystery... are they as still on the inside as they appear? Do they have self-doubt like the rest of us? Each new book gives us another, thus deeper, insight into the mind of someone like that.

Kellerman routinely chucks in more red herrings than you can shake a stick ... Read More:

I had previously read some of the later Alex Delaware books and decided to start at the beginning of the series to find out the history of Alex, Robin & Milo. It was well worth it - these books are a great read and When the Bough Breaks provides the history of Alex's medical background, how he first meets Milo and the beginning of their friendship, and also his initial romance with Robin. Well worth the read. Go and buy it!!

I enjoyed this a lot, and confess myself amazed at Kellerman's staying power. The relationship between Alex and girlfriend was all a bit cloying in a Robert B. Parker kind of a way, but the story was well put together and it held my attention all the way through. Liked his mis-guess at the end, that was a nice touch.

It was good, but don't expect to be haunted by it. A good, well-constructed, serviceable read.

I bought this book at the airport because I have read others featuring Alex Delaware and always enjoyed them. It's difficult for a crime novel to be boring if it's reasonably well written, but this one manages it. Big disappointment.

'Family disputes are a cop's most dreaded calls.....' That about sums it up. This isn't, in my opinion Kellerman's best novel but it needs to be read if you're following Alex Delaware's career. It has its highs and lows, like most of life, and this figures in one of his lower patches. Less realistic than some of Kellerman's work, it revolves around a sick child and the sadness in people's lives. You need to stick with it and some might find that hard. Let's face it, we all want a bit of escapism, sufficient realism to make it believable, some edge-of-the-seat thrills, chills, spills, and, if not a happy ending, then at least hope. Kellerman delivers all but there is more than his usual tinge of sadness that tends to stay just that bit too long.
