I waited a long time to buy and read this book. For one reason or another it always slipped my mind when I was shopping for books. Then one day I remembered and wish I hadn't.

Maybe I read it in the wrong era. Is this sixties humour, American humour, or student humour or all three? I found nothing to laugh about at all. I found each page filled with nonsense. I really isn't my idea of humour.

It really has struck a chord with many people, as these reviews testify.

For anyone wishing to buy it, read several pages and see if it suits your taste. Don't make the mistake I did, and assume because it's a so called classic it will be good.

This is a book with a massive contradiction. Any book with a heavy weight reputation is/should be dull, ponderous, difficult and unreadable by anyone without the word Professor in front of their name.

Instead Catch-22 is a stupid, silly, almost without pretension novel with a lot of substance beneath the gags. It took me 100 pages to get into it. I eventually realised that it's a silly romp with lots of second rate jokes and mediocre wordplay. It's the sort of book were characters get tripped up in the complexities of their own words, and everyone gets lost in their own conversations as they insist on ploughing on no matter how confused things get. After the penny dropped it became an enjoyable read.

It's not a totally ... Read More:

First of all, I was not expecting another Catch-22, both in terms of my overall enjoyment and the stucture Heller was to employ. Therefore this isn't a comparison to Catch-22 alone by any means.

I found Closing Time sometimes exhilerating, sometimes very hard going.

This sometimes the reflects the two strands of the book - Lew and Sammy looking back at their lives was at times repetitive and seemingly unnecessary, while Yossians shennaigans were often highly amusing and, like in catch-22, Heller's love for the paradoxical and the absurd shone through in the hilarious dialogue.

In parts however, the opposite was true. Lew and Sammy were occasionally very touching: Sammy's description of his wife Glenda's rapid surrender ... Read More:

This is a book that requires a level of intelligence to enjoy it and an even higher level to really understand it. It is superficially a novel that is against war but is a study of the human psychological state where every personality is represented, not always simply in one character but often you will find your own personality blended in different characters. It deals with who we are, who we want to be, how we see ourselves and how others see us and it sets this against the backdrop of the second world war. To desribe it as one reviewer does as a disappointing attempt to show how ordinary soldiers are smarter than their officers entirely misses the point of the whole book and perhaps he is just out of his depth with a work of this magnitude.

It is ... Read More:

Books : Catch-22
As petty as this may sound, this is one of the longest books I have ever read (and enjoyed). Although it could never be for the faint-of-heart or weepy - too 'realistic' for them, it has a very fictcious edge. You are left in no doubt that the lives of these men are surreal to the point of M*A*S*H style antics. And if you liked the TV series you will probably enjoy a longer, more adult version in this book. They have the same insane main character, nasty, depressing truth and impossibly crazed and desperate soldiers.
The whole book revolves around the idea that you cannot be insane enough to declare yourself insane...catch 22. The only way out is by not being able to leave. Of course it doesn't mean you stop trying...Being in the american air force you have more ... Read More:

One is inevitably going to make comparisons with this and `Catch 22' and `Something Happened' is not a classic but it is very good. Bob, the first person, is a philandering executive in a narrative of disturbing honesty. It is a long book and sometimes reads like one is exploring every dark facet of his head. Indeed, Bob feels inside pressure against the linings of his brain where things bubble and shove against it as though they might explode - it reminds him at times of a cheese fondue. With head like a cauldron he feels the trappings of his personality as a middle class, upwardly mobile useless family guy with issues. Typical Catch 22 style and a book for big boys maybe.

In Catch-22, Joseph Heller follows the stories of a group of soldiers who have set up camp in a mediterranean island. The main character is Yossarian, and as the story unravels, we follow him and his comrades as they survive the war day by day.

It is easy to see why Catch-22 became a classic. On several occasions at the beginning I was frustrated and decided I just couldn't follow the story. However, as brilliant comedy moments alternated with perfectly described human situations unravelled, I found myself glued to the book. All the characters are next-door people that you could easily identify with. They start by making themselves at home at the camp and you follow the evolution of the war as slowly, each and every one of them begin to lose the plot. From perfectly ... Read More:

Now, I'm not a religious man. But that hardly matters in this case. Notwithstanding the subject matter, this is a novel that you can leave you beliefs at the door and get sucked in to magnificent writing. It's somewhat unfortunate that Heller will be best remembered for Catch-22 when the rest of his body of work is so outstanding. Nowhere else is this more evident than in God Knows. The story of David, from David's point of view, is viciously dark and humorous, perhaps even more so than in Catch-22. Other reviewers have said that it may be a good idea to read the Old Testament before trying this book and they may be right, but I didn't and still I giggled and chuckled all the way through.

It's a great story about David's relationship with his wife, his son and his God. It's ... Read More:

Books : Catch-22
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is a novel full of irony and black humour about the absurdity of war. There is a rich diversity of characters, each with their own personality and objectives: from Milo Minderbinder, a cook who controls the trading of all items on the Mediterranean Island; to Major —— de Coverley, a man whose terrifying face has stopped anyone ever asking his first name; to Yossarian, a reluctant, but very fortunate pilot who is entirely fed up with bombing the enemy.

I found the plot and characters to be immensely interesting: as Yossarian tries to elude his duties (he admits to becoming more and more frightened after every mission), he actually is praised for his courageous actions in flight, is given medals and rises in rank.

The themes of anti-war, ... Read More:
