We've had this book for almost three weeks. I've read it to my two and a half year old son approximately 56 times. I've been woken up with the book on my head. I've found him sat outside the toilet with the book in wait. If anybody asks I am now Stick Man, Stick Man that's me! Still, at least Tiddler can have a break from being late. Story is as rich as all of Julia's and the artwork seems to have reached a new level. If Charlie Cook ever got hold of this he'd have a new favourite.

My 2 year old daughter loves all of these books - very imaginative stories - great illustrations - pages contain lots of detail she really enjoys.

I bought this book along with the gruffalo's child for my 3 year old daughter. What a fantastic buy, she loved it, the animation and story telling is brilliant, not only for her but for me as the reader. I will be buying the other books in this collection shortly.

My 8 year old daughter has had this book for many years along with Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle, Gruffalo etc. and I have to say that all of the books are brilliant (even a cynical 41 year old like me enjoys reading them repeatedly....to her of course). They are all cleverly written (in a rhyming style) and beautifully illustrated (with some repeat themes / characters popping up in various books - look out for them). I would strongly recommend buying this or Room on the Broom as an introduction to the world of Donaldson / Scheffler.

The Smartest Giant in Town My 3 year old son loves this story, he will request it again and again and it always holds his attention and he will listen intently. I have noticed he will attempt to read the story to himself assisted by the colourful images. For those who liked the Gruffalo this is another fantastic childrens story by Julia Donaldson and is well worth having in your child's collection; From an adult prespective its also enjoyable to read.

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story". In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense. All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent ... Read More:

I love Julia Donaldson's books because they entertain the adult as well as the child. They hold us spellbound on the settee as we revel in the rhymes and sway with the rhythms. My five year old boy loves Tyrannosauruses and my 4 year old girl likes the families of dinosaurs and the tiny egg-carrying Compognathus. Even when I'm tired, I feel better after reading one of JD's masterpieces aloud, and the little ones go to bed content because there's always a happy ending.

A wonderful read aloud for 1 and 2 year olds. Lovely illustrations and nice story but just doesn't quite have the pazzazz of the gruffalo and her other books (we own the lot). Too basic for my four year old but my one year old really enjoys it.
