`History provides many examples of a British Army being asked to operate under appalling handicaps by the politicians responsible for British Policy, but I doubted that the British Army had ever found itself in a graver position than that in which the governments of the last twenty years had placed it.'

Maj Gen Noel Mason-MacFarlane briefing the press, 15 May 1940

So opens Julian Thompson book on the Dunkirk Campaign, the title is a bit misleading since it covers the whole employment of the BEF in that forgotten campaign of 1940. Julian Thompson rightly points out that within twenty years the best-trained, best equipped and best-command army went to within a hairs breath of total defeat. The army that in 1918 was ... If when sitting down to read this book you do so with little knowledge of the campaign, but recall that your now deceased Grandfather, veteran of Operation Market Garden, treated his pals with the Burma Star with a larger than usual degree of respect, and want to find out why, then this book is a very good place to start.

It provides a very good overview of the entire campaign, from the retreat in 1942 through to the final victory against the Japs in '45.

The author successfully mixes (and explains) broad military theory with the accounts of the men that fought. Most of the records come from the Imperial War Museum's collection of personal memoirs and as such, present a valuable and insightful perspective.

This review was written for another book in this remarkable series but the comments hold true here

This is a remarkable and exceptionally good summary of the latter stages of the Second World War. It combines a concise narrative with a range of multimedia materials including a CD, facsimiles of original documents and maps to produce, as the title suggests, an ‘experience’. I would also recommend in the strongest terms other books associated with the Imperial War Museum series including “The Victory in Europe Experience”, “The Cold War Experience” and, perhaps most poignant as we lose a generation, “The Verdun and the Somme Experience”. As a professional historian and an IT expert I have rarely ... Read More:

Books : The Royal Marines: From Sea Soldiers to a Special Force
At first sight the shere size of the book may appear daunting, but the reader who delves into it is rewarded by what is a treasure chest of stories, details and information about the history of the Royal Marines. Julian Thompson is clearly passionate about his subject matter, as one might expect from a retired Major General in the Corps, and his written style is equal to the task of recording 350 years of military history in one volume. Due to it's size and level of detail this is probably not one for the general reader, but anyone with a special interest in the Royal Marines should be especially interested in this excellent book.

If you are interested in the history of war, this is one of the books you should read. And it is a good read as well! A well thought out book that does take it's readers behind ememy lines. The story of the brave soldiers part of the Long Range Desert Group and the Chindits were a highlight for me.

Books : No Picnic: 3 Commando Brigade in the South Atlantic, 1982 (Cassell Military Paperbacks)
'No Picnic' is very much a military buff's Falklands book; it starts right at the moment that Julian Thompson receives the call to assemble his Commando force, and stops just as the Argentines surrender, and there's nothing about the whys and wherefores of the war's political background (Max Hastings' 'Battle for the Falklands' has all that). Much emphasis is placed throughout on the difficulties involved in keeping the war machine oiled, and Thompson maintains a strategic focus throughout; i.e. there are no sweaty descriptions of assaulting Argentine trenches, as of course Thompson did not do that.

It's very dry (the initial chapters consist mostly of detailed descriptions of the composition of units and divisions and so forth, whilst, later on, the ... Read More:
