The Prophet is about a mysterious religious thinker who is about to leave for his native land. Before he goes, many people have just one question to ask him. In a very few words, he tells them his accumulated wisdom primarily in a nondenominational way. The only exceptions come in the references to rebirth. The essence of each brief lesson is that we have to step outside of our own perspective to see things in the way that God does and wants us to.

Let me give you an example. When someone transgresses either man's laws or God's laws, we tend to condemn the person harshly and focus on punishment. This is like treating the person as though they have fallen below some level of what it is still to be human. Yet no one does anything ... Read More:

This small book contains a collection of texts on love and 'the path of the heart', in the form of poems or poetic prose. It tells several stories of human beings who have loved and been loved. Many different stories, with diferent circumstances and different endings, but always something in common.

In the best Romantic tradition - and there are, for instance, clear echoes of Blake throughout the book - the individual is opposed to society, to established customs and practices, in his desperate and unremitting search for true love, often found outside accepted and acceptable social norms. That is the case of arranged marriages, where individuals (mostly women) are forced to submit to the will of parents or guardians and to marry against their ... Read More:

This book is exactly what is says on the tin...
One of the kind of books that can be picked up at different times in your life and will tell you something pertinent to your circumstance.
It is beautifully insightful and poetically lyrical. It is accessible too, the translation is a good one.
I find it a great friend when I am travelling.
Recommended!
Enjoy.

Because Kahlil Gibran is such an interesting man - I've read bits of his biography, and bits of his Prophet, and his interpretation of the life of Jesus - you may want to buy this, as I did. But watch out, this isn't a book, just a collection of out-of-context aphorisms, such as "Knowledge and understanding are life's faithful companions who will never prove untrue to you." That statement might be useful given some context, but on its own it's just wishful thinking in my opinion. This seems to go against the more considered ideas he includes in his real books.
