I picked this book up, read a couple of pages and couldnt put it down. A truly moving story of the different lives of two boys. What a fantastic author Khaled Hosseini is, he brings the story alive. I didnt want the book to end.The 2nd best book I have ever read. Caz

This film's story begins in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the 1970s. We meet two 12-year-old boys, Amir and Hassan. The two are close friends. But there's also tension in their friendship: Amir is the son of a well-to-do family; he is a Pashtun, the ruling class in the country at that time. Hassan is the son of the family's servant, and is a Hazara, a racial group looked down on by many Pashtuns. Though Hassan is Amir's friend, he never forgets he is also his loyal servant. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini is a book that the author researched while visiting Kabul. It is a story of friendship between two very dissimilar women who were ages apart in background and in education. They became close in order to survive and to endure the environment that they were forced to live in. The reader grows to understand that there existed between them a closeness like that of a mother and daughter. This intimacy was built upon much mutual respect and much love which these two (2) stunning characters generated for each other. The novel is really the story of the lives of Laila and Mariam. I have read The Kite Runner in 3 sittings and was left in a daze for days. As soon as I heard of this book by the same author I got my hands on this to fill the void left by the Kite Runner. It is addictive to read and I had to finish it to find out what happened at the end. I was left saddened and felt that I was going through a mourning process as the characters have left an effect on me. It is extremely sad that what women go through in this story is taking place still in reality, especially in this day and age. Khaled Hosseini is a fantastic author and I hope he writes many more books to show the world what the people of Afghanistan are really going through because of war.
