I have for some time now become increasingly interested in WW1, it holds an appeal for me that is somewhat difficult to pin down exactly, but a significant part of my fascination stems from the fact it was a human tragedy of very real and very epic proportions that I can scarcely imagine the horrors of; and this is precisely what Lyn Macdonald captures so eloquently and forcefully in this excellent book.

Macdonald has crafted a gripping narrative of the third battle of Ypres that is deftly punctuated with recollections of the men who were there, around which she weaves a context to build the broader picture and place the events in a story that reads almost like a Hollywood blockbuster, though one never forgets that all this happened ... Few battles are as seared into the British historical consciousness as the battle of the Somme, the months-long offensive against the German trenches during the First World War. There the newly-trained divisions of 'Kitchener's Army' suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties, all for advances that were often measured in yards. It was a baptism of blood, one that often depopulated villages back home of an entire generation of young men and left an indelible impression on the minds of its survivors.

Lyn Macdonald's book is a chronicle of the battle from the viewpoint of the British soldier. She begins by describing how so many of the soldiers came to be on the Somme battlefield, through their recruitment into the ranks in the weeks and ... Read More:

Macdonald has made an important contribution with this book on a population which very little had been written about - the nurses behind the front lines during the first world war, particularly in France. They were immortalized in a very popular song of the time "Rose of no man's land".

She brings to life the terrible existence of these women. Mostly from middle class genteel families, they came face to face with terribly wounded and dying soldiers, in hospitals run more like very strict boarding schools by moralist sisters. Many surprising insights into life at the time come out in the book. I was particularly struck by the great difficulty for many soldiers of having wounds dressed or bodies washed by women nurses. Many of them had never ... Read More:

1915 The Death of Innocence is one of those books, that just when you think the narrative can not get any more distressing, it does, yet something makes you want to read on.

The narrative is at times horrific, in its description of the horrors of trench warfare, in particular the use of poison gas at Ypres at 1915 and the slaughter at Loos, in September of that year, when the British army lost over 10,00 men in a matter of hours. Lyn Macdonald is also very good on the realtionship, or lack of it, between Douglas Haig, and Sir John French.

What emerges is a sense of the command structure being out of its depth, and trying to face up to modern warfare, using 19 c methods and tactics. In hindsight it is easy to see the slaugher on the Somme, ... Read More:

How many times have you seen the phrase "If you only read one book read this" to find that, after reading the book, it's not so great after all. Well this one time you will not be disappointed. Lyn Macdonald takes you straight into the hearts and minds of those involved in the conflict with her blend of narrative and first hand accounts. From the very beginning of the book you are drawn into the conflict that marked the end of imperialism and ushered in a new age of industrialised warfare. It is a refreshing approach and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Books : To The Last Man: Spring 1918
With her painstaking review of written and oral evidence, Lyn Madcdonald has succeed in bringing home the experience of war in the early part of the 20th Century, and making it live for those fortunate enough never to have been tested by the call to arms.By seeing the western front through the eyes of the ordinary soldier, it puts into perspective the trials and tribulations of the 21st Century. As the last few Great War veterans finally pass away, such a record reminds us of the sacrifices of previous generations, and shows us that the soldiers of the Great War were not simply lambs led to the slaughter, but brave individuals who believed in the cause for which they were fighting. Might I suggest that Lyn Macdonald has honoured the British Tommy of 1914-1918 in much the same ... Read More:
