I took this book on holiday with me and I feel a week by the pool is a perfect way to enjoy this book.

I really enjoyed the pace of this work. I felt it gave just the right amount of detail without dwelling on unimportant facts.

For me it was constantly enthralling. As a 23 year-old I certainly learnt a great deal. The detail is far greater than the BBC series that accompanied the book. My only doubt is whether had I lived through the times discussed I would have found it a little lightweight.

This book is a delight, a gem. The original illustrations take the diaries beyond the mundane, and Thomas Livingstone's gentle humour enlivens the often dreary weather and seemingly constant worries over Agnes health. Zeplins, Chimneys, the wash house, news from the front, the ironing, the cost of coal..... all of life is here. You will love it!

The work of journalists, perhaps moreso than that of other professions, is often viewed in a stereotypical light. Andrew Marr's book however sweeps away much of the romance and glamour in favour of a down to earth this-is-how-it-is approach. He is well suited to the task, having moved through many of the important stages in the print and broadcast hierarchy over the course of his career.

Although the book is billed as a "short history of British journalism", most of the book is taken up with impressively detailed accounts of what a journalist does, how they do it, and why, addressing also issues of personal motivation, bias, editorial influence, government pressure... The historical section in fact only ends up occupying one chapter ... Read More:

This book is a phenomenal read. Personally, I don't think everything in it holds water, but this kind of broad-spectrum investigative journalism is a rare thing in todays corporate media. Marrs manages to paint the picture, in broad strokes and in detail when possible, that it is INDEED possible to rule by secrecy. Why would anyone want to decieve the world like that? Look at the history of humanity abd you have your answer. This is after all a planet, were the "leader of the free world" is the grand-son of fascist who participated in a failed coup against Roosevelt ans was later condemned under the Trading with the Enemy Act (yes, Prescott Bush had close ties with Fritz Thyssen).

The wealth and power wielded by these groups will make think revolutionary ... Read More:

The character development in this book is extremely good, and the storyline well thought out. The author gives readers a chance to empathise with the situation of each individual; for the Summer King's ex-summer-queen contender, Donia - who due to her love for the Summer King, is painfully subjected to an eternity of icy torment until another takes her place. For Aislin who loves Seth, her Gran and both fears and hates the faeries that only she (and other humans with "the sight" can see.) For Keenan, the Summer King, who has a really horrible mother (killed his father) and although Keenan cares for all the poor human girls (but in particular, loves Donia) he must lure human girls into faery life to finally find his Summer Queen (which will save all his fey subjects and dispose ... INK EXCHANGE is the sequel to WICKED LOVELY. The world that Marr has created is incredibly dark; the faeries in both novels are not the usual faeries you find in literature and the heroines of Marr's works are not the usual heroines either. This is life, warts and all.

INK EXCHANGE follows the story of Leslie, a young girl whose family life is a living nightmare - her father is a drunk and her brother is addicted to drugs. It is through her brother and his world that Leslie suffers terrible abuse, abuse which leaves her wanting to escape the pain and fear of her life, and ultimately to regain some control in her life. It is to this end that she decides to obtain a tattoo - a way of reclaiming her body. The tattoo she chooses features eyes set around a pair of wings ... Read More:

This book was sent to me and I don't think I would have selected it had I seen it in a store. But I was gripped from the first page and could hardly put it down. It takes a lot to grip ME! But this author REALLY knows what he is doing, and, in just a few words, paints portraits so vivid that you are in the minds of all the characters and just longing to know what is going to happen.
The theme of charity, a middle-class family taking a delinquent slum kid with them on their Scottish holiday, is particularly relevant to today and school violence.
The boy, from a ghastly home, alcoholic parents and rats, enters a new world of decency, love and respect. He does not know how to react.
And when his time with this family is over, how does he return to his ghastly family? ... Read More:
