Although only 40 pages long, you get an insight into the way that both Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels felt about the world they lived in and how it could change for the greater good (in their opinion anyway). I do encourage anyone with even a minor interest in European politics, to give this book a try. Even though I was fascinated by the two authors ideology (Ultimately, the hope that a Proletariat will rise to conquer the all-oppressing Bourgeoise, in every country) I do feel that they did not make clear any kind of policies that they would enforce after they took power. I give this three stars because there is another edition, possibly from penguin which has a more literary introductory piece which is part biography of the authors and part biography of the books, ie describes popular styles of writing at the time which influenced Marx. The prefaces are important though because in at least one of them Engels describes how the book is not as relevent as it once was, particularly its twelve point list of demands, such as universal education (a moderate demand and pretty much necessary for a developed economy today). It lends itself to proper contextualising of the book, being in posession of the whole story.

Much has obviously been said of this work! Humanist-Marxists say it is too mechanistic whilst analytic Marxists try to ignore the Dickensian passages which describe working conditions. In truth this book, in true Marxian style is the 'dialectical' synthesis of basically all that went before. Marx forswears many of the grinding debates with other intellectuals and revolutionaries of the time in favour of a 'capitalism for dummies style'. Your hand is held as you progress from simple 'laws', each of which is taken to the limit of its logic before the next idea is broached. Just to say that you can also be emotionally abused if you are a man and the same difficulties apply in finding the strength to get out of the relationship. So anything that can bolster that is much appreciated!

Don't be put off! Marx's discussion of the work of the 'right' Hegelians is fascinating, and it reminds us that, although Marx won the argument, Stirner and co. were actually interesting figures.

It's flagged as a 'student edition', and as such it's ideal. The entire original book, after all, runs to 700 pages in some editions, and most of that comprises detailed critiques of several 'young Hegelians'. These figures aren't of much interest any more. Here, though, Christopher J. Arthur has done an excellent job of selecting the essential and most interesting parts of the book (together with a couple of smaller, related but important texts). So unless you're a paid-up full-time scholar of either Marxism or the young Hegelians, this is the edition you need.
