A very thorough book. Bringing together sources pro and anti Saladin to give a rounded as factually based as possible an account of his life, personality and motivations. It was particularly refreshing to read a book on him which provides insights and opinion in to his diplomatic skills (which some might interpret as manipulative). All in all a very fair reflection on the leader rather than the overly romantic interpretation in some accounts. Only drawback of the book is that at times it is heavy going.
