I bought this book for my two boys who are six and seven years old, it looked great to me. Unfortunately after reading a few of the stories my boys said the book was just plain boring! Maybe it would be better suited for girls??? there are so many lovely books out there and I liked the idea of having lots of different stories all in one book, but it didn't work this time !!!

A book that we have been delighted to read over and over and over and over and over and over again to our 4 children over the last 16 years because it is delightful

Like many of Margaret Mahy's books this books is a treasure to brighten your life. Other reviewers have said most succinctly why, so I'll confine myself to saying that truly this is a book that you will look forward to reading to your child and your child will love too.

Barney a nine year old boy is being haunted. He thinks it is Cole, his dead Greatuncle. He finds out that Cole was a " magician" and is not in fact dead. If you want to find out what happens next get the book! I liked this because it was gripping, lots of detail and mystery. I recommend the book be read in the scary month of October.

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old, I'm now 28 and I still read it about once a year. as a 12 year old I found it captivating, mysterious & exciting, a near mirror image of all of my daydreams of adventure, magic and romance (only with a much better plot).one of those rare books that can make you laugh out loud or want to cry. It has good strong characters that you can identify with & beautifully mixes magic and adventure with normal life in a way that makes it totally believable. I never get tired of reading it again, bringing back all those memories good & bad of being almost a teenager & how my life was then. Much more sinister than Harry Potter. Mahy successfully interweaves reality with the supernatural in this tale of personal discovery. The characters are well-drawn and the plot is a real page-turner. Fans of more 'complex' children's/teen literaure (Pullman/Garner etc.)will enjoy this book.

Every story in this book is lovely. Margaret Mahy always manages to weave magic around the most ordinary situations, making you look at everyday things in a whole new light. I first read this book when i was about fourteen or so, and I finally bought it a few weeks ago at the grand old age of 24!I had taken it out of my local library so many times that I must have paid for it ten times over in fines. The stories still evoke fabulous images in my mind and I still like to read it now. I will ensure it is one of my daughters favourite bedtime story books!The magician's house with many windows, and the Bridge Builder, are simply wonderful; it is as if Mahy took a look at dreams I had as a child and wrote them down. we've had this book from the library several times. It is a wonderful story of a paper-doll chain that finds its way around a city, each doll painted/coloured by a different person whose personality affects hers. My four year old daughter loves it as a bedtime story. And it has led to any number of paper-doll chains in the house. And it is well written enough to be interesting to adults reading it as well.
