This book is very hard to read. The writer tried so hard to tell us the story from the point of view of a ghost, and tried very hard to be inventive, as some reviewers said. But it is NOT. In recent years, we have got the American Beauty which is written exactly the same way. This is a bad copy at that.

From the pure literary point of view, this is a bad book, because of these factors: the narrator is too remote, and unbelievable, the story is weak for the readers. It is anything but engaging. There is no urge in me when I turned the pages. If it is not for the fact that I paid for it, I would not go beyond page 50. So it is definitely not a page-turner.

The writer also tried very hard to give the book a mood of ... Read More:

Like the other reviewers, I read this book because I enjoyed The Book Thief so much. I Am The Messenger is a very different book, but, I think, equally as brilliant. It's very readable, (I couldn't put it down and carried it around with my all day) and the characters are flawed but I loved them all. The book is very uplifting but never wallows in sentimentality or emetic sweetness. If you like things that are quirky, and a little different, then give this book a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I'm a complete book worm and this book has gone straight into my top 5 all time best books!

Totally absorbing. Fantastically written.
Sad, happy, poignant, life affirming (even though the narrator is death!)
The characters get into your soul and it will stay with you for a long time after you've read it. I finished it a few days ago and have recommended it to everyone and now, I want to go back and read it all over again!

It's a cliche but if you only read one book this year, make sure it's this one!
Couldn't praise or recommend it more!

Originally intended for children, with his book German-Australian author Markus Zusak has created a wholly original story. First, the narrator is Death, who talks in a kind of roundabout language, part all-knowing, part creepy, part loving.

And second, the main character is an ordinary German girl growing up in Nazi Germany who must confront many personal difficulties and traumas during the course of the Second World War. This is not so much a book about the extermination of the Jewish race under Nazi occupation, but the ways in which many Germans went about their ordinary lives at the time and the extraordinary lengths some of them (not that many, though) went to save their Jewish friends.

The story begins with Liesel Meminger, a traumatised ... Read More:

Books : The Book Thief
At first I found this book irritating as I got used to the unusual narrative style and the page layout. However after about 50 pages or so you are drwn into the world of Liesel (The book Thief) and her surrogate family and friends. The book runs to over 500 pages and I read it in a little under 2 days so that gives an idea of how engrossing it is.
However throughout the book I felt I was being emotionally manipulated by some clever narrative tricks and at the end I think the feeling was justified. The context of the novel is of course one of the great tragedies of our time and one of great inhumanity, however I felt the author was deliberately playing on the readers emotions and trying too hard to elicit an emotional response, in fact to elicit a tearful response.
