Nice to find a book that strips away the jargon and really lets you get into the gut of the program. Highly recommended

This is quite a big book, and comes with a very informative DVD. It goes into a lot of detail and this sometimes makes it hard reading, it probably best to not try and read it "cover to cover", but rather use it like I do as a "reference" book. Some excellent techniques are shown, and the book is very well laid out and it is normally easy to find the information you require.

The content that's in the book isn't bad, doesn't waffle too much, and goes about things in a very practical and informative manner and would be an essential purchase were it not for the fact that it hasn't kept up with the software. There are some sections that only tell half the story (or less), particularly those on noise reduction, sharpening, exporting and keyword management. The publishers provide a pdf update, but it's a supplement rather than the whole book and that makes it awkward because it means there's no single definitive resource. I bought this to help me use the software, as most people will have done. I'm reasonably literate with software packages generally, as well as photographic concepts and techniques. However, there's so much to CS2 that a reference book really was in order. This book is a bit too big to be a vade mecum, but then I don't use CS2 on a laptop so that doesn't matter. The book makes great reading on a cover-to-cover basis, and is easy to dip into if you've forgotten something and need a quick refresher. Thoroughly recommended.

I haven't had this book long so this review is based on a general skim plus some in-depth reading. I was looking for a book on colour management and Photoshop. I had just changed my printer inks and paper from the manufacturers and discovered how important colour management is to get accurate photo prints but I was confused about the whole issue. The colour management section in this book is the business: clear, consise and detailed. My understanding has grown enormously. This book is no 'light read' but it is packed with excellent advise on Photoshop. If you are a digital photography enthusiast and you use Photoshop 7 then this book will help you get the most from your hobby.

I own several books on Photoshop CS and this is the best. Some of his techniques, such as the one for shrinking masks around hair, are absolutely amazing and he recommends using more difficult but ultimately more successful methods for selecting areas. The black and white section also goes to some length to explain what must be the best methods I've seen for creating the most effective contrast and atmosphere. All of these techniques can be applied to other themes and are not intended top be used literally as presented in the book. The accompanying CD is very useful and in some cases, fills in a few blanks. The exercises are complex and need some practice to be effective. This book was recommended to me by Steve Caplin, the author of "How to Cheat in Photoshop" and it's turned out to be a good read. I was mainly interested in a book on Photoshop from a photography point of view, specifically for areas like level, curve and colour adjustments, which this book certainly covers and more. In addition to this, the book covers digital capture, photoshop configuration, colour management, output, photoshop workspace. In adition to tone and colour adjustments the book goes on to cover image repair, montage, effects, filters and shortcuts. Presentation is excellent, photographs are clear and text is easy to read.
