On November 7 1938, a 17 year old German Jew, Herschel Grynszpan, enraged by the suffering of his parents, who had been expelled from Germany together with 12 000 other Jews, walked into the German embassy in Paris and shot junior German diplomat Ernst vom Rath, who died three days later.
Vom Rath's assassination sparked what the Nazis had been planning for months, a nationwide pogrom and orgy of destruction against the Jews, across the Third Reich (Germany, Austria and Sudetenland).
On on November 8 it had been announced that Jewish children could no longer attend "Aryan" state elementary schools, something that had hitherto been allowed where there were not sufficient Jewish elementary schools. At the same time all Jewish cultural ... Read More:

Painful and devastating, yet utterly compelling. Painstakingly and thoroughly referenced, he documents not only the utter depravity of but also the appalling scale and ruthless persistence of the systematic murder of European Jewry.
This book is a sharp scalpel to views of innate human goodness, to the contemporary degrading of the horror of 'genocide' and the final nemesis of the fraud of holocaust denial - every civilized person should have read it.

An excellent introduction to Israel's history in this day of make believe accounts about the nation. He shirks little, sifts and searches the tensions and tribulations around and within the nation during its extraordinary birth. His documentation is as meticulous and thorough as usual, yet the narrative is pacy and absorbing throughout. He underscores the extraordinarily plural and free character of this unique democracy, without ignoring its faults.

A highly recommended masterpiece by this eminent academic historian.

This is narrative history at its best. It covers events chronologically, moving from front to front, but without awkward breaks. The coverage is military and political but also the human dimension, with many stories of individual tragedy, horror and heroism. This will stay with me for a long time. The only slight downer is the maps, which are all at the end of the book, unrelated to the narrative and not terribly clear.

From the vast materials that he has accumulated about Churchill, Sir Martin Gilbert has now selected material relating to Churchill's relationship with the Jews. Throughout his life, Churchill was a staunch supporter of the Jews and of the Zionist cause. His father had many friends among the wealthy leaders of Anglo-Jewish society - Lord Rothschild, Sir Ernest Cassel, Baron de Hirsch - friendships which his son inherited. Churchill entered Parliament in 1901, where he strongly opposed both the Conservatives' Aliens Bill of 1904 and the Liberals' Aliens Act of 1906. At the 1906 General Election he had become MP for North-West Manchester, where a third of the electorate was Jewish (and where he first met Chaim Weizmann, who had settled in Manchester in 1904.) ... Although this isn't a particlarly big book, there is a lot to learn here about Winston Churchill the leader.I did find it hard at times to grasp all of the information at hand but there is no doubt that plenty of research has been done about Churchill's leadership during World War 2 and it is a credit to the author.
This is not the best book I have read on the great man. That honour belongs to the excellent biography by Dominique Enwright. But this is another insight into one of the great British characters of the 20th century and it is an admirable effort.
