I want to see more stars against this book, which is why I am typing this review. Having lived in Italy, I was searching for an authentic Italian cookbook and when this book was given to me by a discerning friend, I knew I had found what I was looking for. It is a real delight...so full of useful tips ...not just about the process of cooking the recipes but about the ingredients themselves. It is the book every Italian mother should hand on to her daughter! Those readers who may be put off by the lack of photos of the actual recipes should think again...Mary's recipes are delicious and foolproof. Italy on a plate! I struggled for years making my own pasta using the instructions which came with the (Italian) machine....but once I followed ... Read More:

This book is brilliant! I am 22 and have no children but i did'nt have a clue on how to cook!! This book tells you all the basics including how to cook potatoes! This is much better than some adult books because it relays all the simple things of cooking which many adult books take for granted that we know. Excellent book and I'm sure it's very good for children as well!!!!

I'm slightly biased with the review for this book....as part of what was written could be the story of my family. My grandfather emigrated to Scotland from Italy in the 1910's and it is natural that the story struck a cord deep down. The journey begins in 1913 when one of the Crolla's - Alfonso decides to emigrate to Edinburgh with his young wife and finishes after the Second World War. It recounts of the difficulties they encountered both in peace time and duting the war, of how they conquered them to make a better life for themselves and of the beginnings of the famous delicatessen Valvona and Crolla in Edinburgh.
