Unarmed Fighting Techniques of the Samurai offers the reader a chance to see the direct transmissions of techniques from the authors collection of densho scrolls. It is essentially a compilation of written techniques (kata)from all 6 of the practiced Bujinkan schools, and as such consitutes information that has been "kept aside" for many years. Now it is available to everyone. Dont get to glamoured by this book though. The techniques are not easy to understand if you have not seen them practiced, and there is a lot of variation in the way they are done (in a class)which could cause confusion. I found this to be an excellent text for a refreasher or learning the use of the Jo. The pictures are excellent and with a good training partner you can get most of the basics down. Of course nothing can replace an instructor...but this is a good aid.

This should be considered as the intro text for student of Ninjutsu. This book gives a complete general information about Ninjutsu by the Grandmaster himself. It covers almost everything you need to know about Ninjutsu. Including a brief history, techniques, body conditioning, weapons and more. This text is an excellent introduction for beginners, and should be in every library.

This book is great. It is not a text book which will help you learn the Martial arts of being a Ninja. But it does dispell some notions about ninjustsu. It is a must read, regardless of art studied. The book is an interview, using the Q&A format, of Grandmaster Hatsumi. And is a very easy read.

If you are looking to be told secrets of the Ninja of old then this book is for you.Having said that the secrets are not clear for all to see.The author and translator challenge you to change your way of thinking as, as the translator says, it's what is not written that is important.Another excellent book by Hatsumi it shows why his students just call him 'The Boss'.

It has been a long time coming but finally we have a book that advances on from his previous stick fighting book. However, if all you want is to have more in depth knowledge regarding the evolvement of these forms then it's perfect. I'm not that interested personally. The secret forms are not so secret application and dedication allowed me insight to these long ago. For me there was nothing new in this book, which is quite sad really given the authors vast knowledge. His previous is still the better of the two. Any serious martial artist interested in stick fighting will already have discovered all that this book could reveal. Stephen Turnbull has once again compiled an excellent resource for another facet of Japanese Martial arts history - this time the Ninja. This is not a Ninja training guide, it has very few pictures of modern day Ninjas, shuirken or other Ninja accessories. This book has been extensively researched and gives the clearest view of the 'real' secretive organisation/clan/class/. Because of the great secrecy involved with the Ninja there are plenty of misconceptions about their physical and mental abilities. This book does not deal with the fictional aspects (apart from saying that they are indeed fictional). Instead Mr Turnbull talks about the history and circumstances of the Ninja including some wonderfull ancient Japanese art depicting them in action. Read More:
