I got this book for my marketing assignment and I was more than dissapointed. It can be interesting for leisure reading, but certainly this is not more than that. Some failures are described in less than a few sentences, especially in culture failures, which doesn't explain anything. It lacks depth of analysis and I do agree that it seems like a clips from the newspaper. Just flashy titles...

I got this book for my son (10) who is not a very keen reader, only likes fantasy/magical stories. I thought I'd vet it for him to see whether he might like it. As someone said earlier, I got worried by the depressing start although I liked the way it was written. The language is easy, not too many difficult words that can be so tedious for the reluctant reader. But very quickly I got gripped by the story, the pace of the book, the odd interruptions from the author, the spookyness and the humour. Basically, I loved this book and its creatures and I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately I finished it too quickly. I have now passed it to my son and I told him he was going to love it. He is now half way through and said, even after the first few pages, ... Read More:

I was looking forward to reading the sequel to Matt Haig's fantastic book Shadow Forest and when I saw that the American's got theirs first I decided to get it instead of waiting until next year for it to be released in Britain.
This story follows on from where Shadow Forest finishes.
Samuel and Martha have to go to school and do not fit in. Meanwhile Troll-son is in the forest, has lost the family eye-ball and he is threatened with being sent to the Betterer (a sadistic troll that tortures troll children until they become less troll-like and become more like humans), so he decides to run away and stay with his hero Samuel Blink.

Mix into this a selfish school girl and her greedy father, an Uncle that keeps acting like a dog ... Read More:

I like Matt Haig and admire his experiements with genre and style but I agree with some other reviewers that his rendition of the teenage psyche is poorly and, irritatingly conceived, the main characters lack depth and the subject matter verges on the offensive. It should have been a quick and easy read but I had to have several attempts to digest this one with sizeable pauses in between. I'm a fan of Hamlet! Pick up the original instead, you'll find it a more inspiring and thought provoking read than this ill conceived modern alternative!
