I went from Agnostic to Convert in one easily understood book. I have gone from being a competent procedural programmer who dabbled in objects, to being a staunch advocate of PHP objects and patterns.

If you don't quite get what the OOP fuss is about, read this book and you won't look back. You'll start every sentence with "code to an interface, not an implementation"

If you're looking to pick up in depth PHP knowledge in 24 hours, think again! While the book has now become a valuable resource it is not written for the newbie-wannabe-programmer.
One thing I found increasingly annoying was the sample scripts and 'tutorials'. I found none of them useful and they taught me little, most of them being scripts you would never think of using or modifying. You aren't told why or when you would use the script. (no scenario's)
Experience in programming in other languages is critical, else this book will fly right over your head as it did with me. If you're looking to pick up a programming language, I recommend a less full and head on book such as "PHP in easy steps" by Mike Mcgrath, which breaks down the basics ... Read More:

Books : PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice
Let me just say that this is not a bad book at all, it's just isn't good enough in my opinion. Maybe it is for starting programmers but it is not for me.

It succeeds well in explaining some of the more common patterns in PHP4/PHP5 but fails to goes into detail on a lot of them.

I'd really recommend some other books. If you want to learn about design patterns, there are a lot of better books out there. Unless you need the explanation in PHP code ...

I was not fully satisfied and learned little from it.
Not a bad book, but disappointing to me

Books : Sams Teach Yourself PHP4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself)
This book has been designed to guide beginners into the world of PHP, however you'd notice there are a few errors in the book in which the author contradicts himself so watch out for those. Only if the reader has never done any programming of any sort before would lead him to confusion when coming across the errors. Other than that, it still provides a quick skim-through read for HTML-experienced users to quickly learn and make use of the PHP language. Please note that if you wish make heavy use of databases on web pages (MySQL) it's best you get yourself another, more MySQL-specialized book.
