I bought this book after reading a serialisation in a paper, and found it a really fascinating read. Everything from prostitution to guns to drugs to cyber crime to diamonds to people trafficking is covered in a wide ranging examination of the globalised nature of the black market, and its enormous influence on society and politics.

Glenny has the skill to keep a reader interested during the whole of the book. Although this book is a few years old now and perhaps abit dated (it doesn't cover the Kosovo conflict and was published a year after the war in Croatia and Bosnia ended) it is still excellent reading for those who know little abit the region.

glenny is a journo with a degree in drama who thinks he can write history. it's all rather hastily cobbled together, poorly structured. some bits that are 'clearly written' are wrong, others are borrowed from other scholars like Duncan Perry. it received a rather negative write-up in the English Historical Review.

Books : The Balkans: Nationalism, War, and the Great Powers, 1804-1999
I bought this book as I needed a book on the Balkans for my history coursework. This book was the only text I needed to do the set essays on the region. After using it for this I was interested enough to read the rest of it. Its a well written book, and easy to read- there's enough detail for the interested but not so much you get bogged down in it. I have to admit I did lose track of who was who in some of it- partially due to the unfamiliar names I think.

Books : The Rebirth of History: Eastern Europe in the Age of Democracy
Each chapter of this book is a concise overview of one of the countries formerly hemmed in between the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain (except the DDR). The details covered range from distant history to economic, cultural and military factors affecting that country at the time of writing (about 1990, within a year of the 1989 revolutions). The author's writing style (`sounding' very much like a discursive BBC journalist) is chatty and informative, his wry, balanced and perceptive commentary making this book very readable. And as for his sceptical and worried predictions of 1990 about the `end of history' ... they seem justified so far. Thoroughly recommended for general reading or a quick survey of c. 1989 Eastern Europe.
