Wow, I can't even put into words how good this book was, and so much better the second time around. The classic tale of Hester Pryne, forced to wear The Scarlet Letter as a sign to all of her adultery, but she refuses to name her lover who is then forced to bear his guilt in silence.

Enough reviewers have recounted the story better than I could. Suffice it to say I loved Hawthorne's prose, it was very dense and lyrical at the same time, and you have to pay close attention or you might have to backup and reread a paragraph or two. His descriptions of the scenery and people came alive, especially the character of young Pearl. And I very much enjoyed the scenes in the forest -- it was amazing how Hawthorne brought it all to life, ... Read More:

I can't recall reading a so-called 'classic' which is as bad as this. Probably the best bit is before the main narrative, where he's talking about his time at the custom house, though this is also quite boring, but it lacks the prominent faults of the main narrative: childishly simple psychology and symbolism, unwarranted melodrama, EVERYTHING! HAVING! TO! BE! FOLLOWED! BY! AN! EXCLAMATION! MARK!, Hawthorne continually 'telling' rather than 'showing' (see Creative Writing 101), his complete lack of an ability to foster sympathy for the main characters in the reader, implausible dialogue and plot developments, etc. etc. The only reason I can think of for it holding the place it does in the canon of English-language literature is that it was the first American ... This book is very 'American'! By that I mean that it is one of the great classics of American literature, and has all the hallmarks therein, albeit with a twist. The key to understanding the foundations of American literature is man's great battle with nature and the wilderness, in which he forges a place for himself, a foothold for civilisation and becomes even more of a man than before. It is a theme that crops up everywhere from Moby Dick to Last of the Mohicans and beyond. Unfortunately it doesn't really do it for me.
This book tells the same kind of story but from the point of view of a woman wronged by the civilisation that is being created around her. It is interesting that Hawthorne uses this to subvert and question what civilisation is, and indeed ... Read More:

In Hawthorne's times, wealth and power were vested in landownership.
In this book, a conflict about landownership is solved in favour of a member of the powerful by incriminating of witchcraft and executing the poor owner of a hut. `Clergymen, judges, statesmen stood in the inner circle round about the gallows loudest to applaud the work of blood.'
But the innocent victim utters a prophecy on the scaffold: `God would give them blood to drink.'
The wrongdoing becomes a curse for all generations to come. They will be `slaves of bygone times.'

The House of the Seven Gables, the expression of that odious Past, stands for `what we call real estate - the solid ground to build a house on it - is the broad foundation on which nearly all the guilt ... Read More:

Hawthorne tells of a community looked over by a mountain that has a profile that resemble a majestic human face. One day some who resembles the face will come and the town will have these majestic properties too. A procession of persons come and each fails to truly resemble the Great Stone Face. Each leads to disappointment. As youth turns to old age the community come to recognise that one amoungst them truly resembles the profile. He has been there all along.

Its a great story and viewed symbolically, it is worth reminding ourselves that the marks of character are a product of a life lived. And, that the focusing on the outer game can block the recogition of significance.
