I bought it for our kids as a reference book. They sit and read it! The only thing is, it doesn't have the rude words in I remember looking up up as a child.

Also has handy 'usage' boxes which gives direction on how some words cam be used.

Well worth getting in my opinion.

An excellent dictionary, as one would expect. Just deeply irritating that it comes with a sticky blob, attaching a fairly useless booklet to the dust jacket. It is impossible to entirely remove the sticky blob from the dust jacket, though it comes off the fairly useless booklet very well. Rather than have goo on hands and other books have had to ditch the dust jacket, reducing life of dictionary. Sack someone in marketing.

If you write a bit, have one of these by your side. In a short time it will become an essential writing tool, able to turn even the most unpromising material into something appreciably better.

I'm not particularly interested in the specifics of the OXFORD PAPERBACK THESAURUS, save to say that Oxford, and possibly Collins, are the best of its type. I'm just glad it fits into my back pocket and does what it says on the tin, so to speak. And that's the bottom line: this is an excellent and user-friendly dictionary of synonyms and as portable as my laptop.

Feeling pretentious, precocious or obnoxious? Hey, a thesaurus can help...provided you understand the rules. If not, you may find yourself unwittingly dropped flat on your ... Read More:

I bought this dictionary without really assessing the market because I trusted an Oxford dictionary to be the best. Since then I have used the equivilant Collins-Robert (CR) dictionary in school, and while that in itself is very good, I'm still glad that I bought Oxford-Hachette. The typeface is clear, it has a vast array of sample letters, bills, contracts etc. in the middle section to assist people such as students who are going to live in France, and most importantly it has a HUGE range of vocabulary. Despite being cheaper than CR, it actually appears thicker, and it also comes with an accurate pronunciation CD-ROM. There isn't much to choose between them in terms of vocab, but I'd choose Oxford-Hachette over Collins-Robert simply because of the many ... Read More:

Before buying this book you need to ask yourself just one question. What are my language goals? If you want to pass a GSCE exam or have something to use for reference on holiday, then you can buy a much cheaper, smaller and lighter dictionary that will do the trick just fine. However, if you want to be an advanced Spanish learner, then you'll need a substantial dictionary, and this is the best I've come across, having tried several previous dictionaries of varying sizes.

One problem I have had in the past with dictionaries is the lack of words. This has over 300,000 words and thus realistically covers all the words that even an advanced learner would ever need. Also, there are interesting pages about SMS abbreviations in Spanish and how to navigate ... Read More:

If you cannot afford the £750 for the 20 Volume edition of The Oxford English Dictionary, or if you do not have the shelf space to put them upon, then this is the edition to get. The two great volumes contain nearly four thousand pages, more than half a million definitions, and eighty-five thousand quotations illustrating the meanings and context of many words. What more could you ask for?
Whenever I come across a new word or one I am not sure of the definition, I turn to my copy of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary and find a lot more information than I expected. It is the kind of book that you think you only put on a shelf and refer to it "once in a blue moon", but when you discover all sorts of interesting words and etymologies of common words you want to look ... Well, what can I say? It's a dictionary!
It's pretty much a normal dictionary - and don't get fooled by the word 'pocket' because you'd have to have a pretty big pocket to put it in! BE WARNED.
I gave it 5 stars because it's a dictionary and it does it's purpose. What's good about it is that it gives extra things like Usage Notes, which include things like spelling confusion and meanings e.t.c.
It is a useful dictionary, clear to read, things like origins, formality, spelling tips, pronuncuation, e.t.c that help it to do it's job efficently.
All in all a good dictionary but if you don't have it it's not like you need to get it - it's just a dictionary with a few extras.
