This is great for any time of the year but more so when you need a quick start to a lesson or a change during a lesson. I use it sometimes as a pre-starter for the times when pupils aren't arriving all at the same time (after break or lunch). I also use it when I announce to the class "let's have a change as you are working extremely hard" little do they know I planned this and have already identified the activity! I have taught English in a 'good' school, a school where some pupils are very weak and more recently in a special school for EBD. It gets used in all of them! A fab resource not just for English teachers.

This book is packed with interesting, easy to follow and simple (yet effective) grammar based classroom activities. All the major grammar points (tenses, conditionals, modals, articles etc) are included with each containing a number of different exercises covering a range of different learning abilities. Most exercises contain illustrations of some description meaning you can knock out good quality activities quickly and at short notice. The Cambridge Handbook series is consistently good in terms of being accessible, easy to use and affordable. This Grammar Practice Activities book is no exception and should be included on any serious EFL teachers bookshelf.

Generally, this is a good book. It is well organised, presenting new ideas clearly and succintly. The text covers all major issues in language teaching including the presentation of new language, literacy, the four "core skills", psychological assumptions, behaviour management, the teaching process and lesson planning. Material is presented in an organised and easy to use fashion. Chapters are sub-divided into sub-chapters and units, and there is an extensive index. Another major strength of this text is its frequent review - it is now in its 12th edition. For teachers who have trained recently or have been in practice for some time, this book has very little to offer. There is nothing "wrong" with the content, but it offers reasoning that should be common knowledge these days (communication / discussion helps students learn and should be included as an important dynamic of the classroom environment), and activities that teachers shouldn't need a book to create! As a teacher, you should know issues which are within the ability and interest of your students to discuss - do it. I bought it thinking it would offer quick lessons to help my classes, but I was mistaken. There are loads of up-to-date materials and aids available online.
