It basically tells you what to expect if you had the ability to travel back in time and found yourself a tourist in Ancient Rome. Based around AD200 but the author has borrowed from sources ranging over 300 years. It gives you an informative guide at every stage of your journey from getting there to eating out, where to stay, shopping and what sights every tourist ought to see and avoid! The book has lots of quotes from the likes of Cicero, Horace and Petronius but perhaps most amusing of all is the pages of useful phrases. This book is a great introduction for those seeking to gain some insight into who the leaders of the early Roman republic were. each person is given from one to a couple of pages where their achievements and failures are presented. The book conatins many illustrations, and several sidebars with information about life in the Roman republic.

This book explores the highly complex lives of the first six Caesars, from Julius Caesar through to Nero. I myself have a rather limited knowledge of the Emperors after Caesar, so I was well pleased with the explanations of the rules of the Emperors. It is, as said above, an excellent starting point for research into one of the most turbulent times in Roman politics, but not recommended to people looking for a highly in-depth biography of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. It is highly enjoyable and the material lends itself well to the style of the author, allowing the tale to unfold. To often most of our reading around the Ancient world centres on Rome, Greece or Egypt. This book looks at the various nations and in some cases tribes that stood against the power of the day, Rome. There is a quote at the beginning of this book that made it almost compulsory reading for me. It points out how we often view The Roman Empire as a civilisation far more advanced than any other nation of its era based upon the wonders it has left behind. What we do not know or forget though is there were nations and peoples of the same era that may have been equally as advanced but were obliterated at the Roman sword.
