This trilogy is excellent. Took me a while to get into book one but once the story really got going I couldn't put it down. Lyra grows into a young adult throughout the trilogy and its wonderful to follow her through her trials and tribulations.

Armoured bears, witches, deamons, god, angels, heaven and hell-all and more are wonderfully thoguht up by Pullman and I recommend these to anyone.

This prequel is the story of how Lee Scoresby met Iorek Byrnison (characters in the His Dark Materials trilogy, and if you haven't read that, better to start there than here). It might fairly be classed as a ripping yarn. It's a tale well told, charmingly illustrated with engravings by John Lawrence: inessential but fun.

I bought this Pullman book thinking it might be suitable for my 10 yr old daughter. She is doing a project on China so I thought it might bring in an interesting aspect on Chinese culture, as the main character is a Chinese girl called Lila.- Not only did the prose not live up to it's review status, I was shocked to discover that the imagery and moral values are totally unsuitable for young children.(The book has been recommended for 8 year olds and up).
Pullman's main push in his book seemed to be to subtly yet profoundly introduce the philosophies of atheism and humanism - with no hint of this on the cover.
My main concerns as a parent are;
1) The book undermines a child's confidence in his parents;"Didn't your father ... Read More:

I've just finished Philip Pullan's trilogy, His Dark Materials Series and I think it is one of the best books I've ever read. The plot is deep and dense with moral themes to it as well. I rate this book a good five stars

A young and independent girl called Lyra is forced into adventure when her close friend is kidnapped. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn into this parallel universe of mysterious creatures and soul daemons, tracking the progress of typical Pullman anti-heroes. Through drawing upon aspects of the real world (the gypsy culture that live on barges, for instance, were based on the travellers of Oxford's Jericho canal), Northern Lights is heavily doused in the politics of Christianity and authority figures of the real world.

Suitable for later KS2 Years (certainly 5 and 6, and possibly able Year 4 readers). His Dark Materials trilogy is a great opportunity to increase the interest of reading for enjoyment, and has opportunity for cross ... Read More:

As someone who has recently finished reading His Dark Materials and considers it one of the best series of novels ever written, I eagerly bought both this and Once Upon A Time In The North together from Amazon and - considering them both together - I am glad I did. I love miscellanies and companion books and both of these books are both great for the serious fan, containing snippets of information deliberately out of context - the idea being to make you think and fill in the gaps with your own imagination.

But if you have only read the first book (or seen the film), I would advise buying Once Upon A Time In The North - as that is a great standalone story of reasonable length - and not this one until you have read your way to the end of the His ... Read More:

This is not the genre of books that I usually read but I was hooked from the first page.

The quality of Phillip Pullman's writing meant that I was instantly transported to firstly Victorian London, then Razkavia, a country that I almost feel patriotic about.

I now look forward to reading the preceeding three Sally Lockhart books.

I am not a big book reader, far from it actually, but Ruby in the Smoke just had me cooped up indoors. This was actually the first real book i sat down and read in my own time, a good 5 years ago. I was on holiday, bored stiff because i was too young to go clubbing with my brothers and i was stuck in with mum and dad. So, mum suggested i read a book and handed my Ruby in the Smoke, she hadn't read it but bought it out of her love for the 'His Dark Materials' series. So i thought, what the hell, i'll give it a try.

Sally Lockhart is a sixteen year old orphan living in Victorian London, living with an education, which extends to - straight shooting and military tactics, business is her only educational strong point. When Sally's father is drowned in suspicious ... Read More:

I was given this book by a teenage collegue,who said this was a great read and as I'm in my late twenties was fairly sceptical. It certainly prove me wrong. I really enjoyed this book and just before i finished it, i bought the next in the triology. I saw the film after i had read the book and the film disappointed. It is not a patch on the film. Read this book instead of watching the film!
