I have been a christian for about 25 years and have belonged to various denominations over that time, including AOG, Methodist, Anglican, House Church and now an Elim Pentecostal and have gained many insights in all of these churches, but never have I heard the message of grace explained in this way,(or maybe I just wasn't listening)! This book, in the words of a famous beer advert, reaches the parts that others have not. It has opened up parts of myself that I would never have looked at,such as how legalistic I am,( and me a pentecostal!) but for some reason the way this is written has drawn me in to explore grace in a frightening but liberating way, To open up to God's grace for myself and start to receive what He has for me, not just my ... Books : The Jesus I Never Knew (Yancey, Phillip)
Very often, we tend to read the gospel accounts from a more theological perspective. The numerous sermons delivered focus on the teachings of Jesus, and the hypothetical aspects of his life and relationship with others.

However, Philip Yancey does a great job at exploring the personal nature of Jesus, God in human form, on earth, and the very emotions our Lord Jesus Christ must have felt while here on earth.

This book really changed my outlook on Jesus! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have an in depth look into the life of Jesus, and the relational nature of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I really liked this book. I am an avid reader and would recommend adding this book to your must read list. Another book that really impressed me is Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life – Tools to Connect, by Tiffany Snow, pub. 2003. In this time of increasing awareness for the need to help our relationships, workplace, family, self and environment, these two books are at the forefront of giving us the tools to do so – not only by positive reinforcements, but in the case of “Psychic Gifts,” showing we have a Divine birthright to access the supernatural in our lives, and how to tap into that. I encourage you to Keep Reading, apply what you learn, and be a force for good in your part of the world.

On the whole this is very interesting stuff but it is a bit patchy. It's clearly a collection of shorter works with a common theme (the chapter on Moses was written for a book associated with the Prince of Egypt movie and it's the weakest piece of writing here). But where it works this book really flys. The chapters on Job and the Old testament prophets are fascinating and a really gripping read. And whilst it may not be a perfect book Yancey does do an excellent job at getting across his enthusiasm for reading the Old Testament, despite all it's flaws that make it difficult for modern audiences to get into. His enthusiasm certainly rubbed off on me. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in the Bible but finds the Old Testament heavy going at times. ... Read More:

This is mt first Philip Yancey book and I`ve been devouring it in any spare moments I get; on the train, waiting in lines, even on the toilet!

I found that I had some real problems with prayer and how best to approach it and how to get motivated; so I was interested in this book. At the start of the book Yancey explains "My main qualification for writing about prayer is that I feel unqualified - and genuinely want to learn."

I think that this humble and honest approach to writing about prayer really helped me. He peppers his writing with a variety of short interview extracts made by everyday people on prayer; their struggles and their accomplishments.

Above all the book is insightful and although it doesn`t teach you how to prayer ... Read More:

I was looking for a gust of wind to blow away my prejudice and tiredness of churchlife, sadly I did not find it in this book. Within its 84 sparse pages the author appears to aimlessly wander about with ideas and experience with no real conclusion. Nothing is challenged, nothing stirs the reader to 'get back'. I guess too many folks do not realise that the church is the frontline or is it that perhaps they would prefer not to!
