I was so looking forward to this book, but I found it sadly lacking in... well, passion, I suppose. Mary Queen of Scots is a fascinating historical character, but she comes across as a bit of a wet blanket in this.

While the three voices thing worked well in "The Boleyn Inheritance", it is a bit repetitive here. We get the message early on that Bess is only interested in hanging onto her wealth. We really don't need to be told time after time how worried she is about losing the church silver again.

George and his honour become fairly wearing after the first hundred pages. The only interesting bits for me were the invented dialogues between the characters. But yeah, nice dust jacket and I always like a ribbon thing ... Read More:

This is the story of 3 women, 3 very different women and 1 very odd man.

Katherine is just fourteen when she lands a job that thrusts her into the spotlight of Henry, the man whose riches and homes she wants to share but at the moment this is only a dream, in the wilful childlike head of hers, a head which does not understand the consequences of any of her actions.

Anne is new, she has been contracted into an arranged marriage to Henry, has only seen a portrait of him and him of her. However their first surprised meeting is not successful as she inadvertently pushes away the stranger who approaches her as a vagrant or ruffian; it is in fact Henry come to surprise his new bride.

Jane is the third and final ... Read More:

This is my second of Gregory's books I have read, the first book I read was 'The other Boleyn girl' which is much better, it's much more structured and had more depth. 'The constant princess' is interesting enough to finish but it isn't a book I would recommend to people.

I came to THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL not overly concerned with historical accuracy, but wanting a good read at least. However, what I found was to be quite a disappointment.

As many reading this review will already know, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL centres around Mary Boleyn, the sister of Anne. Before Anne became mistress and then Queen to Henry, Mary was his mistress, used as a pawn by her family in order to gain advancement for her family. As you would expect, the sisterly relationship between Anne and Mary is portrayed as a strained one - even before Anne offically takes Mary's place. To say that Anne is a dislikeable character in this novel would be an understatement; I found her to be horrible. At the same time, I found Mary to be quite dull. She is made out ... Read More:

I love Philippa Gregory's Tudor novels and am only sorry that I have now concluded reading all of them. This one has some problems that disappointed me - Elizabeth is a giggling, easily-led dope, and not the shrewd manipulator and politician that we know her to be from historical record. I suspect Dudley and Cecil are fairly accurately represented, however, and I was very interested in the viewpoint of Amy Dudley, the innocent wife cast aside in favor of power and the title of King.

This was an interesting read, and one that kept me turning the pages, but it was not up to the standard of the other Tudor books. I preferred Boleyn Inheritance and The Constant Princess for intrigue. I hope for better things in the future.

I'll echo the reviews by others, but I want to add a note of warning for anyone purchasing a copy - I have an copy, bought new, that sat unread for far too long on my bookshelves. The pages from 417 to 464 are missing and it seems that these include the crux of the tale. (Examining the book, this looks like a printers error rather than pages falling out as the book is in A1 condition.) A huge disappointment!

If you are picking up a second hand copy, avoid ISBN 0 00 647337 7 published in 1996.

The final book in the Wideacre trilogy and tells the story of Julia and Richard Lacey's daughter Meridon (Sarah Lacey). Her mother gave her up to travelling gypsies at birth to protect her from the Lacey madness.

After her gypsy sister is killed during a trapeez act by the father of her unborn baby, Meridon is consumed by grief and accidentally discovers Wideacre and her inheritance. She dashes everyones hopes as she wants to farm the land for a profit for herself.

On her deathbed she is tricked out of her inheritance, but somehow finds the strength to live and against all odds win back Wideacre and the man she loves. She is then able to give Wideacre to the poor.

A happy ending to a mostly depressing trilogy.

Terrible. This book was a gift, and i should have given it straight back.
Considering the standard of her other books, this is disappointing. Tacky, farfetched, and just generally bad

The second in the series after Wideacre which tells the story of Julia Lacey, the daughter of Beatrice and Harry Lacey. She does not know her true mother until the very end of the novel and her incestous birth.

This female character is much more likeable than her mother Beatrice, however she lacks a lot of her strength. She wants the poor to have a share of the Wideacre profits or to give them Wideacre. She is raped and pursued by her brother (they belive they are cousins) Richard to marry him. This means he will get Wideacre and she will be left with nothing also being denied her true love James Forteuss. Richard has the Lacey madness and is a killer, cheat and bully like their mother sadly.
