It's about time! After a deluge of tepid, psycho-babble tomes, along comes a cogent, refreshing slab of common sense. I was beginning to think it was just me getting cantankerous at 36. It's like having a wise, eccentric auntie tell you what you already-suspect-you-might-be-starting-to-almost-realise; but kicking you up the arse as she does it!
Read it in one sitting. So gripped I didn't even get round to putting my feet up, or turning on the 'proper' reading light. Who cares? As Janet says, 'rules are made to be broken! Wahey! Thanks Janet!

I am very much looking forward to getting stuck into this book, but I personally feel misled by the publication date showing on Amazon and wanted to bring this to the attention of others.

I purchased this book because I was looking for something 'recent' on the topic of strategy. Whilst 2004 is not that recent, I have great respect for M Porter and so was happy that it was recent enough for my purposes.

Unfortunately, upon opening the book, I find that it is a 1980 book on strategy with a 2004 preface.

The content is still good but it kind of defeats the purpose if you are looking for some modern thoughts on and techniques relating to strategy.

This classic work on competition is indicative of the importance of Michael Porter's pivotal contributions to management literature. The book seems as fresh and relevant today as when it was first published more than a quarter-century ago. Porter, a professor at the Harvard Business School, is the author of 16 books, and a leading authority on competitive strategy and economic development. His ideas have guided economic policy worldwide, which may account for his nine honorary degrees and numerous awards. This book demonstrates the reasons for his influence. He provides a clear, deftly written, very accessible guide to developing and implementing competitive strategy. He covers the fundamentals of value chains, costs, differentiation, technology, ... All in all, an enjoyable book. It is always interesting to view something from someone else's perspective; in this case, how the Brits view their father's mundane "daily drivers". Interesting to note how Ford products are viewed as somewhat boring, yet popular because products such as the Cortina and the Gran-Dad, er sorry, Granada, were reliable, durable, and stylish in that they copied their larger American cousins.
I found the Austin 1100 article to be of interest; that car was sold in Canada as the Austin America; in retrospect, it was far ahead of it's time; the current Nissan Versa seems to be an update of the Austin !!
It you buy this book, check out the Hillman Hunter photograph; the car is interesting but you'll see what I am referring ... Read More:

I thought I'd pick this up and give it a read on a whim, having watched a few of the lovely Miss Porter's documentaries on BBC Three I found myself really quite engrossed in her presenting style and choice of subject matter.

I'll be honest, I wasn't really expecting much (being a typical guy quite averse to 'chick-lit') but actually found it to be a real page turner, in a light hearted and comical style, which actually made it quite a pleasurable, if short, read.

The main thing that got me was just how genuine she comes across in this book, page to page through her clear-cut and sometimes comically inventive narrative it is undeniable she is a very likeable and engaging character, and every date and story told is felt to be very sincere. ... Read More:

If you buy this book, you will be wasting your money, it is simply not good enough.

Yes, every topic is layed out on a nice double page spread, but surely its far more important that you get the right information, rather than being able to fit it all on a double page. this means that some topics are simple not covered in enough detail, whilst others contain a lot of waffle, just to make it fill the double page.

psychological theories are never covered in enough detail, and even when they are mentioned (which is not often enough) the explanations are not detailed enough.

The obvious choice in this field in the cambridge handbook, although it is pricey and not an easy read.
My recommendation would be ogden - its a good compromise between ... Read More:

Roy Porter, noted and trained as a medical historian, turned his attention to the social development of London, and we are the richer for it. Porter is a Londoner, and has a passion for the city. He is, however, frank in his conviction that London has had it's hour upon the stage:

'London is not the eternal city.... Between the two Elizabeths, between 1570 and 1986 to be more precise, it was to become the world's greatest city.'

Porter sees the abolition of the Greater London Council (GLC) by Margaret Thatcher as a benchmark to the demise of London as a great city (I happen to disagree; will he change his opinion in light of the upcoming mayoral elections in London?) Porter's current pessimism about London is very apparent from page 1 of the introduction; however, ... Read More:

I have had this book since it was first published and it has been worth it's weight (considerable) in gold. I was nursing at the time so obviously had an interest in the medical side. However, this is an excellant history book and of interest to those who like to find out odd facts or the roots of colloquialisms.
It is so interesting it hooks you into actually reading all of it. I have, so has my daughter and my best friend (also a nurse).
However, it is factually correct and written well enough to be deemed a suitable source for academic studies. So after reading it for pleasure I found it was a recommended course book for a module in my Health & Social Policy degree. My friend has also delved into it again for her Nursing Studies degree.
This is a book that you keep and ... Read More:

This book is great for anyone who is doing modules as part of their degree which focus on all the aspects of auditing. It has an in depth but simplistic format which makes it very readable and enjoyable. Well referenced and very easy to read, due to the larger than normal text font throughout the textbook. It covers a vast areas of auditing including computer assisted auditing techniques which are becoming more popular in organisations. It also cover environmental auditing which organisations are choosing to disclose more often. This book is very good and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to do auditing, in education and also in practice.
