GREAT BOOK. Don't take any notice of the negative reviews. Its a very unusual "crime" novel and beatifully written. Needs time to read properly but it does grip from the beginning and the macabre content is sufficiently offbeat to make it a real page turner. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who simply likes a good story.

Well, not having read the R J Ellory novels in the order that they were written; my first find being "A Quiet Belief in Angels" following it's inclusion in The Richard & Judy book review series, I thought that I would struggle to find a novel to knock AQBIA from the top of my list of favourite reads.

Then along came A Quiet Vendetta which had me hooked from the first page and resulted in my not being able to put it down until I had completed it!

The other good thing about all of the R J Ellory novels; and I can vouch for this from personal experience, is that you can give them as gifts, safe in the knowledge that the recipient is going to get as much enjoyment from them as yourself.

Surely it is only a matter ... Read More:

Generally, I read at bedtime, because it lulls me off to sleep. Not this book; I read it in two sessions!

I had previously enjoyed very much, R J Ellory's 'Quiet Belief in Angels', which made me want more - otherwise, I probably would not ever have read this book, as I would not normally read thrillers. I was prepared to be disappointed (as 'Angels' was a tough act to follow), but this, his first novel, was equally beautifully written, with believable characters and almost poetic prose. Stunning.

My review for this novel is well overdue, it is a truly fantastic read, and although this short comment may not do it justice, I felt it necessary to voice just how much I enjoyed this work.
For those of you that like this authors unique style, I think you might agree that he is a master at characterisation. That was what I loved about this book, what kept me hooked and thinking about the characters within it even when I wasn't reading. Characters like Walt Freiberg, Ben Marcus and Cathy Hollander, however shadowy bring the story to life and emphasise everything that is good and great in Ellory's writing.
John Harper, the protagonist, pulled along in the inexorable grip of fate finds he has a father after years of believing he was an orphan. That this ... Read More:

This is a wonderful book and has literally so many ingredients (love, betrayal, stark violence, gangsterism, nazi death camps) you would be hard put to fit the story into a genre ; crime? historical saga? love story? One thing is sure, you cannot put it down. This is what the more learned amongst us call "Serious Popular Fiction", I suppose. I read about 52 books a year. My means of evaluating a books' worth is simple : I ask myself "Was it good?". Well, this one was excellent. As a fan of "serious" fiction, I am aware that "crime" fiction is often seen as the poor cousin of literature. Forget that snobbery, this is a brilliantly told story. It is moving, shocking, funny, sad and, above all, rivetting. I fell in love with Annie O'Neill (note to self : hide these comments ... Read More:
