I think this book is really well written, without being plodding. I love the way she discribes people and places. The relationships with her children being so very different. How the way her mother treated her affected the way she treated her own daughter, holding her at arms length. Maybe you have to be a "certain age" to truly appreciate it? I loved the end, the "twist" and how it all turned out. Can't wait to see the film.

Books : The Private Lives of Pippa Lee
I'm afraid I really didn't enjoy this book as much as other reviewers on this page---in fact, I was very disappointed, having turned to the novel as result of its 'Richard and Judy' selection and after reading (also on the R. and J. list) Sadie Jones's masterly 'The Outcast'.

The first section of 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' (up to approx. page 58) was quite absorbing---a little like the kind of American social comedy that Alison Lurie does so well. Then--just as I was getting interested in Pippa's situation, there was an abrupt switch to a lengthy flashback, told in the first person. Not only did this feel as though a book I had been enjoying had been snatched out of my hands to be replaced by one I hadn't chosen, it also served ... Read More:

This is a very good book that puts art & cultural practice in a wider context (including as it does for example the influence of climate & landscape) by an author who is clearly very impressed by the various Andean cultures & doesn't write about them as interesting but inferior specimens, as did some other books I have read. She writes with great knowledge, enthusiasm and at times admiration about the various cultures, whilst being very much neutral when describing practices that might strike us as foreign, unpleasant or even bizarre.
This is cultural history as it should be, writing about a culture as made up of and by the PEOPLE, not just the king & the male members of the ruling class. I wish the same author would write another volume of ... Read More:

...Rebecca Miller, daughter of playwright Arthur Miller, has crafted seven short stories. Each story deals with a different female protagonist, and each, though different and distinct, is related to the others by the complexity of her character and the honesty of her observations. There is, for example, Greta, a cookbook editor in her late 20's, who only needs to look at her less-than-extraordinary husband's boring, inexpensive shoes to know that she will leave him. Or Bryna, a cleaning woman, living with her kind but spectacularly undynamic husband Milt and Milt's ferociously bitter mother; Bryna's dreams are contained within the made-up media interviews she imagines she's participating in.

Miller's stories are not perfect. But they're damned close and ... Read More:
