The edition of this book that I possess (circa 1970's) claims that this is something like the third most published book in the English Language, loved from America to Japan. It is a seminal book. When Linnaeus was creating his very methodical classification of the natural world it took a vicar from the little village of Selbourne to put in stone the study of nature through its behavior.

This book taught me how to examine the world around me, but it also offers the guilty pleasure of complete escapism. What could be safer then 1780's Southern England, as yet untouched by industry? Gilbert creates a world where human concerns do not exist and the rhythm of the natural world is all through this collection of letters to his friends.

This is an informative, compact book, with a good mix of information. It concentrates on the mountains, but also has useful information on low level walks, places of interest and beaches. It is ideal for hill walkers who also want to be able to plan 'family' activities in the area. It is less dry and more accessible than my edition (not the current one) of the SMC guide to the North-West Highlands, which covers a larger area but is probably the nearest equivalent.
The diagrams are useful and the photos are well chosen.
I would have rated the book even higher if the author had expanded the book a little and included more variations on the largely standard routes that he has included. As an example, it seems odd that it includes the relatively ... Read More:

Books : Wild Walks: Mountain, Moorland and Coastal Walks in Britain and Ireland
The best book in the big, classic and wild walks series. Very well produced, superb pin sharp photos, odd and eclectic selection of walks. Most very little frequented even now. Walks for people who want to go somewhere different. Still a great walk book.

8.200 Challenging Walks in Britain and Ireland by: Richard Gilbert

Books : 200 Challenging Walks in Britain and Ireland
I bought this book to help me branch out beyond the honeypot areas of the UK's national parks and experience the less frequented routes.

I have been delighted with the ideas the book gives. It is easy to navigate by region and the one line summaries at the top of each chapter indicate the map, start/finish, a distance and time for each route.

The routes are truly challenging and I have rarely completed a full route mainly due to transport issues. However they have enabled me to plan routes in areas I would otherwise not have ventured into without someones personal recommendation.

I have always felt the descriptins and timing accurate for a person of above average fitness and an experienced mountain walker.
