I read this short book after seeing all the reviews (thank you) and thought I must give it a go. I have tried lots of 'horror' novels over the years and they have never really engaged me. I read this over two evenings and found it totally absorbed me. The text races along wonderfully.
This is not my typical read - favourite books include: Papillon, Hamlet, Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath and The Old Man and the Sea. I assume it is because having read them they stay with you and insist on being read again. Though my wife prefers to suggest I am simply a bit weird.
As for the new 'Mr Smith' film, which I enjoyed, they follow the same theme but to compare them would be like comparing a Mars Bar and a Snickers ... Read More:

I was prepared to stretch my credulity considering this was a book written in the mid 1970s and there was plenty of off wack new age stuff floating around at that time. However, I cannot forgive some of the stiled and cringemaking writing inside it. It's a really nice idea, it's fairly well constructed, but I get the impression that Mr Matheson ran out of ideas or steam or something and ended up taking the focus away from the very thing that made me pick the book up in the first place.

It's not Shakespeare, or if it is, then it's cymbeline.

Normally, when a film is based on a book I love the book so much more. But not this time. I have to say that I'm liking the film more this time. For anyone that hasn't seen the film or read the book........the book is nothing like the film.......and the film is nothing like the book.. If that makes sense?

The book is good, don't get me wrong. I was scared in parts. However, it's nothing like the film. If you're looking for similar, but better, read 'Salems Lot' by Stephen King.

The only thing the book and the film have in common is that they both involve a man who is probably one of the last few survivors after a virus strikes the population.

With both though, I'm left with lots of questions that aren't addressed and it's frustrating ... Read More:

6.Somewhere in Time by: Richard Matheson

As a 'time-travel' freak I came across the film first and found it utterly compelling. I just had to read the book, to fill in the gaps and, of course, to gorge myself on every moment of this unforgettable tale.
The book, needlessly I believe, has our hero dying from a disease right from the start; who needs it when dying from a broken heart says all that needs to be said?
Nevertheless it's a great read, and a permanent fixture in my book cabinet.
Check out Jack Finney's 'Time And Again' for the perfect time-travel novel.

I would have preferred that the book had got to the point of the main character being hypnotised in more acceptable manner - the film handled this quite well however. The build up to this left me feeling a little wanting but once this episode was out the way the book was quite enjoyable. Providing it is accepted that the book was written 50 years ago it should prove an agreeable read to all those Lymigton fans.

A stimulating book. Very entertaining at times but it also seemed tedious to me. I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece but it has some good parts that makes you apprciate it. Another book with a good concept of a man who shrinks. Great Ending!
