Having seen the Jason London movie many years earlier, his face stuck in my mind as the hero for most part of reading this book. This beats the classical mythology canon in Apollonius' shorter, less convoluted and more modern plot, being written some 700 years after Homer. Although the actual mythological plotline is a much older tale than the story of Troy.

I enjoyed this story immensely, and wrote my final essay on the book. It reads much like an adventure/travel story among the hero and his friends, on a voyage to locate/redeem the Golden Fleece. They travel through the Mediterranean and ancient parts of Greece, Europe and Africa, emerging from obstacles and dangers, including the famous crashing rocks. Not withstanding the ... Read More:

Some of the more negative reviews of this book are less than perceptive. Rhodes' earlier 'The Making of the Atomic Bomb' is an extraordinary book, an exhilarating intellectual adventure that suddenly becomes what we had forgotten it was all along; an appalling human tragedy. The description of Little Boy's effect on the city and people of Hiroshima is some of the most powerful non-fiction writing I have ever read. The atomic scientists believed, almost up until the last minute, that they would be permitted a role in the decision to drop the bomb. When they weren't, it affected them in many different ways. This book is about those ways.

The claim that Rhodes should have 'spared the politics' is idiotic. This book is the shadowy ... Read More:

Books : The Making of the Atomic Bomb
This book was recommended as part of an Innovation Management course that I undertook.

If you can see beyond the history, and the politics there are a number of important "real-life" lessons in innovation theory.

Leo Slizard has the vision of the "chain reaction" before the scientific community fully understand the structure of the atom.

At the core of the story is not only the need to develop "the bomb" but also the complex process technologies that wil allow man to extract Uranium 235 from Uranium ore and to produce Plutonium. For me one of the most interesting parts of the story is the development of the science of "implosion".

I can imagine that there are some distinct business parallels ... Read More:

This is a valuable history of the closing stages of the {first?} "Cold War" - concentrating particularly on the Reagan/Gorbachev encounters and the resulting agreements to reduce strategic and tactical weapons in Europe. Written in Richard Rhode's usual authoritative style, with copious references to source documents and many personal interviews with some of the surviving protagonists on both sides, my only reservation is that the book concentrates on the 'end' of the Nuclear Arms Race, rather than on it's making, as one might have inferred from the title. Yes, the author mentions both superpowers' native Military Industrial Complexes as being among the prime reasons for sustaining the billions/trillions of dollars expenditure over some fifty years, but ... For me the holocaust has been a sleeping partner for some 5/6 years since I decided that prior to visiting Auschwitz I really should get some of the basic facts straight in my head so as to make more out of the visit. In doing so, and having been well aware of the general descriptions and claims about the holocaust for decades, I of course found that for every claim of truth about the numbers involved and horrors meted out to the jews and of course others targeted in the holocaust there is another alternative claim or fact. In fact there is more counter claim and argument about this sorry episode in 20 century history than I think any other. My problem with the 'death camp facts' is that they are very difficult to get to the bottom of. I, like many people ... Read More:
