I bought this book because I hoped to find insider tips and "secret" advice that only locals know...but found none..I mean the advice is ok and reviews of the hotels and restaurants seem to be accurate as well but there was nothing you would not find in " normal" guides like lonely planet ..Ok Unofficial has ratings for hotels restaurants and attractions but you can get them from many web-sites like tripadviser and yelp..
I've been to SF before and done all the typical touristy stuff..that s why I bought this book and expected to discover hidden gems..but unfortunately found none.
This book is ok for first time visitors but there is not much more value when compared to "traditional" guides

Books : Portugal (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
I usually avoid The Lonely Planet guidebooks as I find them getting more & more commercialised as less 'off the beaten track'. Therefore when I used the guide to Portugal I was thrilled at it's content, maps, recommendations & overall informative value. I have since lent this to friends who also have had nothing but praise for it's merit - well done!

6.Lonely Planet World Food: Spain by: Richard Sterling, Alison Jones

Books : Lonely Planet World Food: Spain
The World Food series has to be carefully priced, because although these are attractive books, like nearly all published by Lonely Planet, you don't need them. All guidebooks worth their salt give some space to the food, the markets and restaurants, and so all of these books are effectively an add-on, a luxury - this is unlikely to be the only book you buy.

The Spain book in particular feels slightly unnecessary. Unlike Italy, France or India, where the cuisine is hugely developed and highly complex, the food in Spain seems consciously simple, pared-down. This is reflected in the text, which frequently meanders into long digressions about other things. Worse yet is the persistant impression that "World Food: Spain" has been translated from ... Books : San Francisco (Lonely Planet City Guides)
i love the lonely planet series of travel guides, and have bought them for everywhere i go. this one has disappointed me though. it's written by a local who obviously loves san fran but that is the problem. really rubbish things he praises as they are part of his home town, and this guide lacks the critical eye you would expect from LP as a result

For those of us whose idea of a foreign vacation is a cruise to the Greek Isles, castle hopping through Britain, or an auto tour of the Swiss Alps, Richard Sterling's THE FIRE NEVER DIES is likely to inspire a fascination ranging from the bemused to the horrified. The book's thirty chapters span the period from 1975, when Sterling was a naval weapons specialist aboard the U.S. cruiser Oklahoma City sailing Vietnamese coastal waters, to roughly the present. Virtually all take place in Southeast Asia, or Africa, or Baja California, and almost all center around an unforgettable meal or memorable woman. A Real Man's needs are pretty basic.

I think my favorite tale was that of the time when Richard, gripped tight in the misery of nicotine withdrawal, ... Read More:
