As a previous reviewer commented, a number of major event, not least the October Revolution, are skimmed over by the author, while seemingly undue importance is given to more minor events. However, I believe Service's intention was for this book to be a preparatory exercise for further reading - the over-throwing of the Tsar, the battle of Stalingrad and the fall of the Berlin Wall are covered in detail elsewhere. A History of Russia gives a great background to a tumultuous twentieth century in the county and sets events in context for further reading. Service is unbiased, backs up his interesting observations and, although sometimes dry, paints a coherent picture of times of momentous change. He is better on the earlier years than more recent ... This is a really good book. While Stalin may be a character who it's hard to empathise with, Service approaches the topic with complete objectiity, leaving the reader to make up their own minds on the facts. The book is divided into nearly 50 chapters of ten to twelve pages each, which makes it easier to digest each separate issue and event the author addresses. Overall, great book for anyone keen on knowing more about Stalin.

I've been hearing my uncle recite Robert Service poems for years now and was always interested so finally got around to buying the book! I've realised that what I'd heard/read before is nothing compared to the other stuff he's done! The Ballad of How Jock MacKenzie Held The Floor is fantastic. I've had the book for a few weeks now and have read most of it. I've also been going back to the Cremation of Sam McGee and Dangerous Dan McGrew numerous times. Can't put the book down and would thouroughly recommend it!

This book receives two stars for having a good contents, index and references for further reading and ease of access for students or readers wishing to make a quick reference.

It is a history of communism from an anti-communist author, as other reviewers have indicated, however that in itself is not what makes this such a poor, poor book. There are excellent examples of historical writing by authors who are not necessarily sympathetic towards their subject matter, such as Anthony Beevor's books on Stalingrad, Berlin or The Spanish Civil War (AKA The Struggle for Spain).

From the outset I had a strong sense that it would be possible to read the introduction and concluding chapter "Accounting for Communism" and still have a clear idea ... Read More:

I loved this book and encourage others to read it. This book can chill your soul and at the same time make you feel warm inside. From the Cremation of Sam McGee to the Shooting of Dan McGrew, Mr. Service had me admiring his work especially after I read 'Grin' which adopts a good perspective of life. Excellent!

"Songs Of A Sourdough" is Robert Service at his best!. This is nature poetry at its finest. Here the Bard Of The Yukon use picture words that place the reader right in the Yukon of old. As you read you can see the stranger stagger in to the Malamute saloon and feel the fifty below gush of air until he closes the door behind him. You will hear him play the piano and see the ghastly look of the Lady that's known as Lou. You too will jump for the floor when the shooting of Dangerous Dan McGrew starts. You too will hear the Call of The Yukon and understand its Law while you come to appreciate The Younger Son.

I bought my first copy of "Songs Of A Sourdough" during my Canadian honeymoon in 1980. From experience I can give you one bit of advice. Do not, I repeat, ... Read More:

Probably Lenin's most often positively-cited work, a close reading dispels a whole host of myths about the man and the bolshevik movement - the idea that they were dictatorial insurgents just itching to impose their will on the hapless Russians is put to rest in Lenin's emphasis on soviet democracy; on the other hand, the mystification of him as a "nice man" who was merely forced by circumstance to be nasty is exposed as a lie too, with many references made to the proletariat's use of the 'full repressive force' of the state to consolidate its victory. Here is 'Leninism' in its purest expression.

The main question of the book is that - unsurprisingly - of the State's role, first in class society and secondly after the Revolution. And it is principally a polemic, against ... Read More:
