Having just returned from my first visit to Turkey I can only agree with the negative comments voiced by other reviewers. The general tone veers between sneering at the reality of turkish society and derision of anything that remotely relates to the general tourist. All this would be bad enough were the text not hopelessly out of date. Selecting a couple of examples at random from an extraordinary list of errors; Descriptions of the Bodrum penisula include references to sailing schools in Bitez. Guys! - all the schools moved further round the peninsua at least 3 years ago. For Ephesus the visitor is instructed to walk from the lower to upper gates (insane if you've ever been there), no warning of the extreme heat everyone will experience ... Read More:

Books : The Rough Guide to Turkey, 5th edition
I have just returned from 3 weeks travelling around Turkey using the Rough Guide along the way. I have used, and been happy with, Rough Guides on previous trips around Europe and the Middle East but was really disappointed with this guide. The accomodation listings were unhelpful ... in the end, I tended to deliberately avoid the accomodation recommended in the guide! A number of the maps were pretty hit and miss and some of the details with regards to the practicalities of getting from A to B lacked the necessary useful detail. Unfortunately, the guide is already very out of date (the 5th edition is 2003). However, in the end, the principal problem was the general rather opinionated tone which varies from being disparaging at times and downright ... Read More:

Whilst not as comprehensive as some guides (eg Lonely Planet) or containing as much historical detail as others (The Imperial City - John Freely), this guide is the best all-round introduction to a wonderful city. Both photographically and visually it is inspiring and the text is accurate and sensible. It also contains some of the easiest to read maps of Istanbul I have seen. Highly recommended, whether you are planning to visit or not, you will enjoy this book.
