I have had this book since it was first published and it has been worth it's weight (considerable) in gold. I was nursing at the time so obviously had an interest in the medical side. However, this is an excellant history book and of interest to those who like to find out odd facts or the roots of colloquialisms.
It is so interesting it hooks you into actually reading all of it. I have, so has my daughter and my best friend (also a nurse).
However, it is factually correct and written well enough to be deemed a suitable source for academic studies. So after reading it for pleasure I found it was a recommended course book for a module in my Health & Social Policy degree. My friend has also delved into it again for her Nursing Studies ... What can I say, I could hardly put this book down! Its a facinating look at medicine's development throughout the centuries right back from cave man times up to modern day diagnostic techniques for diseases such as AIDS and SARS. I would recomend it to any student doing a science course, not just medicine and it even would be of interest to those just interested in the subject as it does not contain too much technical jargon.

A definate read!

Roy Porter, noted and trained as a medical historian, turned his attention to the social development of London, and we are the richer for it. Porter is a Londoner, and has a passion for the city. He is, however, frank in his conviction that London has had it's hour upon the stage:

'London is not the eternal city.... Between the two Elizabeths, between 1570 and 1986 to be more precise, it was to become the world's greatest city.'

Porter sees the abolition of the Greater London Council (GLC) by Margaret Thatcher as a benchmark to the demise of London as a great city (I happen to disagree; will he change his opinion in light of the upcoming mayoral elections in London?) Porter's current pessimism about London is very apparent from ... Read More:

Roy Porter, who died at the early age of 55, wrote this wonderful history and in many ways it is his memorial. It is comprehensive in its range, provides minute and often colourful details by way of illustration and examples of matters raised, and above all demonstrates an intimate and loving knowledge of the period. Moreover the book is both stylish and witty. A pleasure to read.

Perhaps nobody but the late great Roy Porter (our greatest medical historian as the British Medical Journal's obituary put it) could have attempted to summarise the history of madness in 241 pages. Certainly nobody could have made such a good, if ultimately somewhat flawed, attempt.

Starting with what is good - Roy Porter gives us an excellent overview and summary of the whole history of madness moving from earliest times through to the Prozac present. His writing is crisp and extremely readable throughout and he is generally fair and unbiased. He wisely sidesteps a definition of madness and gets on with telling the story. Porter discusses wider social and cultural issues alongside the personalities and principles, tackling Michel Focault with ... Read More:

Read this book in a week-end, dipping in and out of different chapters. A tour de force that introduces the reader to the British enlightenment, in a very balanced way. Traditional views of the enlightenment are presented against alternative interpretations.
The book is well structured, supported by excellent references and notes. As an introduction to the very British dynamics of this fascinating period, it cannot be recommended too highly.

Roy Porter has written an interesting and informative book. Although relatively short, (sixty-nine pages of text) this is not a simplistic account. It provides a critical appraisal of both the enlightenment and of previous historical analyses of this period. Porter outlines the issues and ambiguities of the enlightenmt, as well as differences between elightenment thinkers, countries and developments over time.

There are chapters on what is meant by enlightenmnet, the goal of enlightenment, religion, politics, who was involved in the enlightenment, and enlightenment and the wider cultural context. Overall, Porter gives a sympathetic account.

My knowlege of history is scant, and I read this book because I wanted to know what the enlightenmnet ... Read More:

This book covers much of the history of Western medicine. It glances through some of the fields of the medicine separately, and in general does not advance year-by-year, or pay much attention to outline large number of developments in medicine. Rather it is collection of almost essay like chapters on various topics, like psychiatry, or history of disease, for instance. This makes the book very readable, something that does not demand you complete attention, yet it also leaves one craving for more. Especially since this book covers only history of Western medicine, and (practically) does not address Egyptian or Indian medicine at all. Of course this is justifiable in the sense that the story authors are trying to tell is about how Western medicine came to be, and there ... Read More:
