Periodically books are written on the subject of the parish churches in England. The wealth of beautiful churches that this country has is one of the most unappreciated aspects of England's architectural heritage and many urban and rural parishes are struggling in the upkeep of these edifices, some of which are of cathedral like proportions to services villages of a few hundred. This is the motivation that Roy Strong states in his introduction for writing this book - to highlight the country church's plight and highlight the challenges we will face to preserve them in the twenty first century. Whereas the twentieth century saw the preservation of the country house, the twenty first century will have to deal with the challenge of preserving ... Read More:

A fine peice of garden history that shows up many publications in the field for the facile coffee table books they are. This thoroughly researched, lucidly written work places garden design squarely in its cultural and political context. The narrative is perhaps tighter in the 16th century chapters before the increasing rate of change of the 17th century makes it a little less coherant, but the only real quibble is that the author does not look at Tudor gardens beyond the royal palaces and prodigy houses nor how the design of great Jacobean gardens (particularly the royal gardens) filtered down to the lesser nobility. This might have given more examples to work with, even if it meant stretching the time frame slightly later.

At the time I am writing this I have this particular copy of the diary in my possesion at my side, and what can I say about it? just fantastic, a remarkable portait of life under King Charles I, Charles II, James II, William III and Mary II and Queen Anne
in all five monarchs that represented a turning point in English History, a break away from the old secular medieval order and into the age of oppulence and full steam towards the industrial revolution and Empire, Evelyn unlike Pepys lets us in on so much of the 17th Century, whereas pepys diary only lets us in on just
10 years (though it should not be forgotten 10 important ones, but it is not his diary i am reviewing)Outside of the absolute full diary this is perhaps
the fullest ... Read More:

Just browsing through the book you are inspired of the enthusiastic spirit of the writers. The level of craftsmanship demonstrated is exquisite, as is the photographic material and the drawings. There is plenty of information on how to build an engine. Of course it assumes that the reader has access to workshop tools and that he has basic skills. I would like to see more in the theory of operation of the Stirling machine, as just one chapter is devoted to the subject. However, all material drives you to start building your own machines and hands-on experience is a good way to cover this lack. As it says in the title, this book is mainly a summary of the building techniques and variations available, but it does not cover the engineering aspect of these ... Read More:

This is a history of the NATION of England - not the history of the ISLAND of Britain. Be aware of this before you purchase this wrongly named book. That is the reason I gave this book 1/5. The content of the book is actually acceptable.

8.Feast: A History of Grand Eating by: Roy Strong
October 03, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Feast: A History of Grand Eating
A good and reasonably detailed history of grand dining. Roy Strong's book is a well written and pleasantly illustrated account of how rich people have eaten from Ancient Greek and Roman times up until the late nineteenth century. Each chapter starts with a decsription of a typical banquet for the period covered, usually quoting from contemporary sources and a historical analysis flows therefrom.

The book is conveniently sub-divided within chapters. It is difficult to think of any book that has been devoted solely to this subject for which a comparison can be made; this in itself makes it a welcome filler to a gap in social history. The only flaw is that the style is occasionally pompous - but forgivably so.
