When Ruth Reichl arrives in New York from Los Angeles, the restaurants are expecting her! She is told by a woman on the plane that there is a photo of her by the till in every restaurant she is likely to review. A plan is needed! So Reichl develops a series of disguises so that she can eat incognito.
(She then eats at the same restaurant with no disguise and notes the different way she is treated!)
I loved every minute I spent reading this book. Reichl obviously adores food and this is really apparent. She writes about food in a way that is totally lacking in pomposity (other food critics could take a note from her book.)
The book explores not only a series of gorgeous meals, and a few not so gorgeous ones! But also the ... Read More:

Books : Comfort Me with Apples: A Journey Through Life, Love and Truffles
'Comfort Me with Apples' follows on from Reichl's childhood memoir 'Tender at the Bone'. As the book starts she is still living in a 'commune' in Berkley with her artist husband, Doug.

Her marriage becomes increasingly unhappy leading to an affair and eventually a break-up. The writing is so candid and so honest that you have little choice than to be swept up in the emotion.

All the time that her personal life is in crisis, Reichl's career as a restaurant critic is going from strength to strength. She takes assignments in Paris, China, Spain and LA, and details of all these trips and the food she ate are described in detail.

This is another wonderful foodie book. Reichl has such a sense of adventure and is so ... Read More:

Books : Endless Feasts (Modern Library Food)
This book is a delight, both in the writing and in the physical manifestation. A collection of magazine pieces about food and travel may likely seem a slight confection, a tuft of candyfloss maybe for undemanding summer appetites, but not so here, for the magazine in question is 'Gourmet'. This is rich stuff, full of wonderful descriptive passages, as you'd expect looking at a list of writers including M.F.K. Fisher, Madhur Jaffrey, Claudia Roden, E. Annie Proulx, Paul Theroux, and Elizabeth David. I owe my exposure to this book to a very good American friend who sent it to me as a birthday present. My deep thanks to her for I know I will read it again many times, though perhaps not as in the first instance, cover to cover in a single session, for that ... Read More:

Books : Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
I first read Ruth Reichl's 'Garlic and Sapphires' and loved her writing style and passion for food so much that I bought her earlier books!

I wasn't disappointed. This is another beautiful memoir describing Reichl's early years and experiences with food. It will be a while before I forget Alice's apple dumplings, her mother's totally orange Halloween dinner or her travels through Tunisia. The book also includes a smattering of recipes.

Absolutely delicious, a must for foodies!
