This was the first Ruth Rendell I had read, which I bought largely because two were on special offer in the local supermarket! The plot was rather thin and somewhat drawn out, particularly in the first half of the book. There was also a reliance on coincidence, such as a concurrent newspaper serialisation of the experience of a family following a husband's/father's disappearance who turned out to be an unidentified body, and coincidental trench digging and re-filling at the time of a murder. Also some scenarios stretched credibility, for example clothes containing money lying around for 8 years in derelict buildings, recollection of a T-shirt seen some 8 years previously, and unduly secretive behaviours, which were necessary to make the plot ... I am not sure what to think of this book. It being written by Ruth Rendell, I expected a mystery, but it really is more of a story about relationships. There is a mystery, but it is secondary and no detective is brought in to solve it. The main focus is on the sisters Ismay and Heather and their interactions with each other, their significant others and their immediate family. Throughout the book, I felt that there was something missing, something that makes the story worthwhile.

John Creevey could only guess at what the coded messages were for...were they the work of a drugs ring, a protection racket, a spy ring, or something else equally sinister?

Unbeknownst to him, John has stumbled upon some teenagers' spy-game, played out between two rival "centres" based in the city. They play amateurish espionage games, trying always to get one-up on one another, and leave coded messages detailing latest orders and objectives. Recently separated from his wife, John is lonely and slightly depressed, and becomes obsessed with these strange messages. Sometimes, he dedicates whole days to cracking the codes, and eventually these strange messages drag John and those around him down into a tangle of revenge and murder.

'Dr. Thorne' is the third novel in Trollope's Barsetshire-series, and the first to steer away from Barchester city and the clergymen living there. The action is set in Greshambury, where Doctor Thorne is living with his 'niece' Mary, who is actually the illegitimate child of the doctor's deceased brother. Frank Gresham, son of the local squire, grew up with Mary and, now that he has come of age, is intent on marrying her. Frank's father however is virtually bankrupt, and to save the estate Frank is pushed on all sides marry 'money' and not some penniless orphan, however charming she may be...

Based on this simple plot Trollope tells a beautiful and captivating story. As always his main interest lies with the inner life of his characters, and he ... Read More:

The central character leaves a provincial town to churn out a series of steadily selling middlebrow novels - now who does that remind me of? This is almost a good book. It has an ingenious mystery at its heart, and Rendell has obviously visited the locations she uses (a rather grim London suburb, a "new-rich" mansion with mirrored walls), a Victorian villa that's seen better days, and taken notes on characters she's observed (a cute Indian girl, a dim gay wine bar owner) but the whole novel seems bolted together from these components. Wexford and his wife Dora and sidekick Burden stubbornly refuse to come to life. And a clunky "relevant" plot strand about women's lib (this is 1979) is dragged in to provide a clue. The whole thing was done much better by Josephine ... Read More:

First sentence: When he lifted it off the seat the backpack felt heavier than when he had first put it into the car.

Chief Inspector Wexford and team are investigating the bludgeoning death of 17-year-old Amber Marshalson. The case takes on an extra dimension when they realize Amber was the actual intended victim when a piece of concrete had been dropped from an overpass onto the first two grey/silver Hondas a short time before. Who wants Amber dead so badly when they failed the first time, they tried again...and succeeded.

I found this a bit of a slow-go. I liked C.I. Wexford but really didn't care much for any of the other characters, of which there were many with very little dimension. DS Hannah Goldsmith is interesting in her compulsive ... Read More:
